The prospect of progressive alternative metal outfit Tool performing at the Sphere in Las Vegas, NV has been on the wish list of many of their fans since the venue opened back in 2023. As you may have seen, the proposition of mounting a residency at that venue is on the radar of the band themselves too, as they’ve previously mused that such an undertaking could possibly come about in 2027.
According to the band’s guitarist Adam Jones, it seems that Tool were actually among the artists initially approached to open that uniquely immersive venue. In a new interview with 99.7 The Blitz, Jones noted that missed opportunity and the discussions that have taken place about a potential residency at the venue. He stated of that:
“We were supposed to open that place. We were asked, and because of ‘Game Of Thrones‘ band politics, we just couldn’t make it work. And then they ended up using U2, which I think we probably would’ve gotten bumped anyway. But they have been really enthusiastic about us playing there, so we’ve been talking to them since it opened about doing some kind of residency there. And there’s just a lot of production details and budgeting and money and timing. So it’s complicated. But I think we will do it at some point.”
Known for prioritizing their eye-popping visuals over their own physical stage presence, Tool are an obvious choice to grace the stage at the aforementioned venue. However, associated production costs with having to essentially overhaul one’s stage show to fully take advantage of the massive all-encompassing LED screens and 4D physical effects come with significant associated costs.
While metal and hard rock had largely remained untested at the aforementioned venue, the overwhelming response to Metallica‘s upcoming Sphere residency has proven that there is a healthy market for heavier genres at the venue.
