As one of the most visually-inclined live bands of a heavy ilk out there, the prospect of Tool performing at the Sphere in Las Vegas has remained a tantalizing prospect to the Californian outfit’s legion of fans. According to Tool‘s own highly acclaimed drummer Danny Carey, conversations toward making that a reality have already begun taking place.
However, as with anything Tool-related, one wouldn’t get their hopes up too soon, as Carey noted in a new chat with the Spiral Out Network (how’s that for synergy?) that he’d liked to pair such a mini-residency with a new Tool album. As any beleaguered Tool fan will tell you, the ever-growing distance between full-length offerings from the storied outfit has long been a source of contention.
That said, Carey did offer a hopeful new timetable in this latest chat for that eventual successor to their chart-topping 2019 comeback album “Fear Inoculum“, which arrived after a 13-year wait.
While Carey was an early proponent for a quick follow-up to that record, time has shown otherwise. Speaking in this new chat, Carey has since pinned his hopes on Tool‘s sixth studio album arriving sometime in 2027. He stated briefly of that: “[We’re] working on a lot of new Tool songs now, hopefully 2027, that’s the goal.”
When pointed out in the below chat that Tool are a very visually-oriented live band, Carey himself agreed, revealing that playing the Sphere was on the band’s radar [transcribed by theprp.com]:
“Yeah, we’re very much into that. We’re hoping when we release the new record, maybe do a stint at the Sphere, ’cause I think we’re the perfect band for that. We’ve been talking to those guys.”
He went on to add:
“The preparation is pretty intense to get everything up… It’s a very expensive endeavor and it takes a while to get into the black, you know? I think it’s a few shows before you make any money, but it would be work cut out.”
When asked if he had been to the Sphere, he replied:
“I just took a tour of it. I haven’t actually seen a full-on show, but we took [a tour] you know, just to show it off… It’s incredible man, I almost got veritgo.”
Carey took part in this chat primarily to promote his new soundtrack collaboration for the just-released Gore Verbinski-directed sci-fi/comedy ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die‘. As a bonus to this interview, Spiral Out Network also got some additional footage of Carey joining the a marching band in Las Vegas as part of a premiere for that film.
