Brandon Boyd Reveals Tentative Release Plans For Incubus' Already Completed Ninth Studio Album

Last November, multi-platinum alternative rockers Incubus revealed that they were “rounding the corner” on finishing up their ninth studio album. As one would expect with that timetable, a 2025 release is indeed in the cards for that effort.

In a newly conducted interview with FluxFM, the band’s vocalist Brandon Boyd revealed a timeline for that effort and the single(s) that will precede it. He also confirmed that sessions for it once again took place under GRAMMY Award-winning producer Brendan O’Brien (Rage Against The Machine, Korn). Speaking on those plans, Boyd stated [transcribed by theprp.com]:

“We actually finished the album, I guess about, a little over two months ago. And it’s like mastered, it’s mixed, it’s just ready to go. We’re working on the artwork for it. The sad part about finishing the album in this day and age is that, as much as I would like to just put it out; I would love to put it out tomorrow, and we could put it out tomorrow, but it would get just lost in the shuffle of the internet, you know what I mean?

And even if… we’re gonna do like setup work for it and it’s probably gonna come out in October. So there will be a single that’ll come out before October, probably in the next few months, there’ll be a single. …Even with all of the setup that we’re gonna do, it most likely will still get lost in the internet [laughs]. Because it’s the internet.

Just now I had this image of comparing putting out an album onto the internet in this day and age to introducing a new star in the sky. It’s like, ‘It’s a special thing. It’s a new star in the night sky.’ ‘Where is it?’ ‘It’s somewhere up there.’ You know, it’s, ‘Which one is it?’ ‘I don’t know, but isn’t it pretty?’ You know, we like sent something into the universe. So personally, I think it’s a really great record, and I’m really proud of it, and all of us in the band are really proud of it. We had a wonderful time recording it.

We did it with Brendan O’Brien, who produced ‘Light Grenades‘. He produced ‘…A Crow Left Of The Murder‘, among other records. You know, I did my Sons Of The Sea record with him. He’s my favorite producer that I’ve ever worked with, and I’m so happy that we got to re-engage with him for this experience.

It happened really fast, which is always a good sign for us, When an album comes together, like quickly, it means that we have gotten into a flow state of sorts. That, and also it’s the first album we recorded — first new album — we recorded with Nicole Row, who is our new bass player. And she just, she knocked it out of the park. We’re all totally in love with her, and she’s become a very fast asset to the band. We’re really, really happy that she jumped on board. So, yeah, it’s, it’s a lot of fun.”

When asked if Row had creative input on the record, Boyd responded:

“Yeah, for sure. We wrote the record with her. She has amazing ideas. She’s an incredible team player. She’s fantastic. You know, we were really heartbroken to lose Ben Kenney, but he’s… I think he’s happier with what he’s doing now, and that’s the most important thing. As artists, we never want to feel like were trapped anywhere. And not that, you know, I’m saying that he felt trapped. That’s more a question for him.

But I know that he just put out solo record, I think it came out yesterday, and he seems very happy, which I’m so, so thrilled for him about. But Nicole just just fit right in. and she’s a breath of fresh air. So we wrote the record with her, and recorded it with her, and yeah, I’m excited for people to hear it.”

Kenney himself stepped down from the band after undergoing undergoing brain tumor surgery back in 2023. In addition to that surgery leaving him permanently deaf in one ear and suffering from partial facial paralysis, Kenney‘s father passed away during Ben‘s convalescence from that procedure.

Kenney later went on to describe his exit from the band as a much-needed “hard reset” and has since stepped out as a solo musician. He released his debut solo album “Powerful Buttcheeks” on March 03rd through Ghetto Crush Industries.
