As it stands at the moment, Ghost remain remain on hiatus, and the band’s mastermind Tobias Forge appears to be resurrecting his death metal band Repugnant (rumors of a reunion show in Stockholm have been swirling.)
Over the weekend, the multi-platinum occult rockers teased, ‘Next week… Something is happening,’ and today (November 04th) it appears that reveal was made. The group have chosen to celebrate their viral hit “Mary On A Cross” amassing over 1 billion streams with a look back at the animated music video that accompanied that track. Director Sean Donnelly goes deep into that process in the below newly shared watch.
Originally released as b-side back in 2019 under the guise of being recorded during a fictional 1960s era of Ghost, “Mary On A Cross” was not an immediate hit. Instead, several years later that song picked up steam on TikTok, going viral in the form of a fan-edited slowed and reverb added form. That success led the band to follow suit, later officially releasing a similarly altered version.
Forge previously spoke at length about the unexpected success of that song and how it made him rethink his creative process. “Mary On A Cross” stands as the band’s most celebrated song to date, having scored 2x platinum status in the United States in November of 2025. Its latest accolade has seen it newly enter Spotify’s Billions Club, signifying 1 billion plays on that digital service provider alone.
