John Dolmayan On Glenn Close 'Drumming' For System Of A Down: "I Feel Better That The Truth Is Out There"

While hosting the 82nd annual Golden Globes Awards ceremony this past Sunday (January 05th), comedian Nikki Glaser made a joke about 77-year-old acclaimed actress Glenn Close having previously spent time behind the drum kit for multi-platinum Armenian-American nü-metal sensation System Of A Down. The seemingly errant quip came about while listing the past accolades for Close and promptly went viral online.

In fact, even the band’s own guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian responded via social media, offering:

“Bet you didn’t know!!!!Bet you didn’t know!!!!!Somewhere between our first drummer and John, Glenn Close was tearing shit up on the drums for us!!!!!!#soad#systemofadown#glennclose#dmsob#scarsonbroadway”

Now John Dolmayan, the man who has served behind the kit for the majority of System Of A Down‘s decades-long run has got in on the fun, stating the following yesterday, January 07th, via his Instagram:

“I guess the cats out of the bag thanks to that a@#h*+£ @nikkiglaser . The fact is @glennclose wrote the drums for most of the second system album and had to come in to lock down decent takes of a few songs as I just couldn’t handle the difficulty and we were running out of time. Thanks to @daronmalakian @serjtankian @shavoodadjian and @teamcoco for keeping the secret for so long. ( a little known fact is that Conan co- produced all our albums ) I feel better that the truth is out there.”

Of course, in reality, Andy Khachaturian is the only other drummer to have officially served with the band, appearing as their percussionist from 1994 through to 1997. Khachaturian has been involved in a number of projects since, with The Apex Theory being perhaps the most successful.
