This past May found Disturbed‘s 2015 cover of Simon & Garfunkel‘s 1965 single “The Sound Of Silence” join the 1 billion views club on YouTube via the official upload of its music video. Since its release, that version of the song has become the signature track for the Chicago, IL-based nü-metal/alternative metal band, as it has continued to rack up global accolades over the years.
Early 2024 even saw Disturbed‘s take on that song hit the dance charts thanks to a popular remix done by Cyril Riley. Yesterday, August 21st saw the RIAA award the track its 8th multi-platinum status in the United States, having last certified it 3x multi-platinum back in November of 2017.
As the band themselves shared yesterday, their rendition has also obtained diamond status in Canada and Germany, 8x multi-platinum status in Australia, 4x multi-platinum in New Zealand, 3x multi-platinum status in Ireland, 2x multi-platinum status in the UK & platinum in the Netherlands & Italy.
A platinum album/single in the United States represents 1,000,000 units, while gold signifies 500,000 units. Outside of traditional physical/digital sales, the certifications factor in digital streams/downloads with 10 permanent track downloads counting as 1 unit and 1500 on-demand audio/video streams from a particular album also counting as as a unit.
