Unearth guitarist Ken Susi was recently interviewed by Kaaos and during the the conversation spoke of the band’s roots and how he feels they’ve remained true to them. While a number of their peers from the early 2000s metalcore scene went on to alter their sound as time went on, Susi feels Unearth have stuck to their guns.
He elaborated on that after the topic of Shadows Fall going on hiatus after graduating to the major label scene with a streamlined sound that produced diminishing returns came up:
“When the fans stop coming to shows, that’s when bands decide to give it up. I’m not saying it’s just them [Shadows Fall]. Metalcore in general, there’s a huge surge for that, and then there’s a million bands copying all the forefathers and some of them got big and remained big.
Some of them claim to be metalcore for a while and now they’re different. We’ve stuck to our roots. We’re one of the only bands that have, and there’s other bands who have been copying our sound for years who may be bigger. It’s okay; it goes with the territory.”
Around this time last year, Susi spoke at length on his thoughts regarding bands that have surpassed them in popularity by borrowing aspects of Unearth‘s sound, you can read what he had to say about that here.
