Like Dredg will ever meet a release date.
If it’s anything like the last one it will be worth the wait
Gonna be tha bomb pussy
I don’t know jay. I love dredg but hated their last release. El Cielo was their best by far in my opinion.
yeah didn’t care about their last album either
“El Cielo” is their unquestioned masterpiece, I met Gavin Hayes and told him that it was the “Dark Side Of The Moon” of our generation. To say he was pleased would be an gross understatement. I thought “Catch Without Arms” while great, was focused on trying to break the band into the mainstream, the song itself laments the fact that bands with less, for lack of a better term, artistic integrity, enjoy the perks of rock-stardom, while Dredg’s “simple needs are scarce”. So while I don’t necessarily blame them for trying cash in, “Catch Without Arms” was kind of Dredg-lite, as Patrick Bateman would say “seems to be more commercial, and therefore more satisfying in a narrower way”. Don’t get me wrong, I “Catch Without Arms”, but “The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion” was a return to form for me. I love the recurring themes, I guess it’s a matter of taste, I just like something a little meatier. You really can’t go wrong with Dredg though, I wish they were bigger, I don’t want them to go a more commercial route, they just need to wait for the rest of the world to catch up.
“it was the “Dark Side Of The Moon” of our generation.”
Whoa, cowboy. That’s a bit much. Considering most people don’t know dredg – which doesn’t mean they’re not great, they’re just not Pink Floyd game-changing calibre. I don’t pretend to know everything about everything, but the only reason I know of dredg, is because of theprp. Just sayin’.
Don’t compare apples and planets.
@robichaud apples and planets, ha, funny stuff, I think “El Cielo” is that good, in my opinion. Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all-time, and “Dark Side of The Moon” is my favorite album ever, along with “Kid-A” and I get the same thrill out “El Cielo”. Those are the three albums I always turn to for the wind-down of a particularly, “interesting” night. Like you said, just because people don’t know it, doesn’t mean it’s not great. I’ll never understand why certain bands don’t get the push they deserve from their record companies, but Dredg is the one of the most talented, interesting, genre-defying bands to come out of the 2000′s, and the only reason I heard of them is through theprp.com. You and I have been on the same side on every discussion we’ve both been a part of on theprp and I didn’t expect you to go the they’re not famous so they can’t possibly be THAT good route. The reason Pink Floyd was and is as huge as they are is because 1. They’re insanely great 2. A suit agreed and put them on blast, Dredg has only one of those qualities.
@alichs, I try and until now have succeeded in not saying, “but you like Limp Bizkit” after every comment you make in opposition to mine. I just couldn’t help myself this time.
yeah I like dredg and limp bizkit, ain’t nothing you can do about it my friend
@jayofdajunglejuice – Actually, I still think we’re on the same page here. I don’t argue that both are great albums by great bands. I also don’t argue that the level of label support wasn’t the same for both. All’s I’m's sayin’s… is… Dark Side is considered representative of an entire generation. It’s one of my dad’s favourite albums… and mine. It spans decades. There’s something to be said for an album that’s groundbreaking, original, and catches the ears of tens of millions. “El Cielo” hasn’t come close to that… yet?
So I just think it’s a bit early to make such a comparison. I can’t agree that’s the “Dark Side” of our generation. I’m not sure there has even been a “Dark Side” of our generation, or ever will be. Ask me in 30 years, maybe I’ll have changed my mind. That said, I don’t doubt that it’s YOUR “Dark Side”.
Interesting you mention Kid A. I was thinking of “best albums of all time” and OK Computer came to mind, because yes, it was great, but also because the press went gaga too. In the end, I found Kid A as great, if not greater, than OK Computer.
ANYway. I’m out of typing breath.
Back to dredg.
@robichaud, fair enough, no matter how great we think “El Cielo” is, it will never reach “Dark Side” proportions, the album’s been out close to a decade already, and I’m not sure it’s even at gold status, it will be one of those albums, that I’ll bring up in ten years and a handful of people will be like “Yeah dude, that album was awesome”. Dredg get to play music and paint for a living so I don’t feel THAT bad for them, but they deserve to be in the argument for one of the best bands of the 2000′s, and deserve to be semi-wealthy, right?
Their last one was miles ahead of Catch Without Arms. CWA sounded like it was written for the sole intention of getting radio play. It’s still a solid album but the atmosphere and experimentation was lacking. Pariah has all sorts of nifty shit in it.
Yea I would have to agree with pretty much everything said here…I’ve been following Dredg since El Cielo came out and the first thing that popped in my head when I was familiar with all the songs on the record was that this was the Pink Floyd of our generation, for sure…then CWA came out and I wasn’t very impressed at all…then Pariah came out and while it has more of an experimental vibe going on much like El Cielo…something was still missing and it didn’t capture what Dredg is capable of creating. So with that being said, I think their new record could be a huge redeemer, if you will, for the band.
WTF is your “Dark Side..” of our century….? Like you know what it should sound like… If you’re like me then you know “Animals” is THE BEST Floyd. Quit acting. Triflin’ asses… How could anyone say “The Pariah..” isn’t priceless. Thank you dredg…
