Trent Reznor On Nine Inch Nails' Score For 'Tron: Ares': "There’s Not One Second Of Orchestra"

Nine Inch NailsTrent Reznor and Atticus Ross have spoken with Empire regarding their upcoming score for the next instalment in the ‘Tron‘ film franchise, ‘Tron: Ares‘. Rather than compose that score under their own name, this new film finds the duo operating under the banner of their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame-inducted instrumental metal outfit.

According to Reznor, Tom MacDougall, President of Walt Disney Music first approached the pair with the idea, having been pleased with the their work on the Golden Globe and Oscar-winning score for the film ‘Soul‘. Reznor told Empire of that initial conversation:

“A couple of years ago, he came by the studio and said, ‘Do you think you guys would be interested in scoring Tron?’ He didn’t even finish the sentence, I was like, ‘Fuck yes, we’d want to do that.’ He said, ‘How would you feel about if it was credited as Nine Inch Nails, versus Trent and Atticus?’ We weren’t expecting to hear that question.”

Reznor went on to say of the resulting work that went into the score:

“I’ll give a few spoilers: there’s not one second of orchestra in our score. It sounds precise and unpleasant at times. It’s not an atonal, punishing score, but we spent a lot of time thinking about the undertones of what’s happening in the story.

The concept of artificial life infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways. We kind of riffed on that.”

Despite having big boots to fill following the acclaimed score Daft Punk provided for the film’s predecessor, 2010’s ‘Tron: Legacy‘, Ross revealed the band weren’t afraid to take chances:

“It’s different [from the previous ‘Tron” scores,] “and in places, perhaps takes a bigger swing for what music can do in cinema. Without sounding fucking pompous. I mean, that was a goal. You know, if you’re going to do it, then you may as well take a big swing.”

Should it not get marred by the recent controversy surrounding the film’s star Jared Leto, ‘Tron: Ares‘ is expected to open in theaters on October 10th. After several years dormancy, Nine Inch Nails returned to the road earlier this month for their ‘Peel It Back World Tour‘, which finds them out with opener Boys Noize.
