Disturbed vocalist David Draiman is hoping to collaborate with rap superstar Kendrick Lamar on a new track. According to Draiman, he and his bandmates in the multi-platinum alternative metal band already have a track mind should such a pairing come to pass.
In a bid to manifest that union, Draiman floated the idea to Lamar on Instagram earlier this month. Speaking of his hopes in a recent interview with Q101, Draiman told:
“It’s something we’ve actually been thinking about pretty seriously. And Kendrick is way at the top of the list. We have this track. It’s part of this new group of material, this new album that we have under our belt. And it’s basically like the modern-day ‘Walk This Way‘ or ‘Bring The Noise‘.
It’s very much like that. It’s about unity. It’s about all about bringing people together. And it needs a strong rapper, whomever that might be, and Kendrick would definitely be an amazing person to collaborate with. I would love to do that. We would love to do this. You heard it here first. Kendrick, if you’re at all interested, let’s go ahead and shock the world a little bit.
Let’s let everybody know that we have more in common than we do that separates us. And let’s take our artistry to another level together. I would love to do that.”
Asked if he received any response about his past social media mention of Kendrick, Draiman replied:
“Nah. Who knows if the guy even monitors his own Instagram account? With somebody that big with that many people following him, I’m sure he’s got like a team of people that do all sorts of things for him. And I’m probably just a tiny little blip in a huge sea of noise. So I would imagine that didn’t cut through. But now that we’re talking about it, maybe it will. I would love for him to actually be aware of it and notice it. And who knows? Maybe we can actually do something.”
The “Walk This Way” mentioned above was a breakthrough moment in melding the worlds of rap and rock. Back in 1986, RUN-D.M.C. took on reinventing Aerosmith‘s 1975 single of the same name, ultimately joining forces with the legendary hard rock group on an updated new version that would find platinum status in the United States.
1991’s “Bring The Noise” would further kick down doors, finding East Coast thrash metal legends Anthrax joining up with political hip hop stars Public Enemy to put a revitalized metal spin on the 1987 Public Enemy single of the same name.
Even if Draiman‘s hopes don’t materialize, Disturbed have already begun rolling out new material from that ninth studio album they have up their sleeves. This past Friday (February 21st), they debuted a new track titled “I Will Not Break“.
