Funk rock legends the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been awarded a new round of multi-platinum and gold certifications in the United States. The RIAA has just bestowed the band with the following awards:
- “Californication” (album) (8x multi-platinum)
- “Californication” (single) (6x multi-platinum)
- “Otherside” (5x multi-platinum)
- “Scar Tissue” (6x multi-platinum)
- “Road Trippin’” (gold)
- “Parallel Universe” (gold)
While the group will be receiving the accolades, the direct profits will be going elsewhere. In 2021 the group sold the publishing rights to their catalog to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund for a deal said to be upwards of $140 million.
A platinum album/single in the United States represents 1,000,000 units, while gold signifies 500,000 units. Outside of traditional physical/digital sales, the certifications factor in digital streams/downloads with 10 permanent track downloads counting as 1 unit and 1500 on-demand audio/video streams from a particular album also counting as as a unit.
