While the peculiarity of their microtonal musical approach and outlandish polka dot laden costumes have helped make Canadian progressive psych rockers Angine de Poitrine stand out amid their breakout year, their relative anonymity has proven to work against them. Exclaim have word that there’s currently an impostor version of the band playing live in Russia, apparently attempting to pass themselves off as the real outfit, and not just a tribute act.
Sam Murdock, an art director associated with Angine de Poitrine, told Exclaim of this impostor version:
“There’s a fake [version of the] band touring Russia already, with the costumes and everything, and they keep tagging the band and they don’t even say it’s not a real band. And they just have a one-neck guitar.”
Judging by the below footage of this bootleg version of Angine de Poitrine, there are certainly some obvious red flags, one of which would be touring Russia. Few Western artists have played that country in the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and ongoing war in the region.
Beyond that, there’s the lack of a double-necked guitar and passable stage production, plus a readily apparent lesser caliber of musicianship involved, all of which detract from this duo being genuine. Exclaim report that fake version of the band played at least one show in Moscow, while it is unclear if they have been hitting stages elsewhere.
The real Angine de Poitrine meanwhile continue to tour extensively this year on the back of their latest effort, “Vol. II“, which landed in April. North American fans can catch them on across the continent throughout the summer/fall. European and UK fans are also in luck, as the group have plans out that way too.
