The classic era lineup of Jane’s Addiction have officially put their dueling legal feuds to bed. 2024 saw the group’s roster of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery & drummer Stephen Perkins return to the stage together for the first time since 2010. It also brought forth the first new music from that incarnation of the band in nearly 35 years. Unfortunately for all those involved, it was also extremely short-lived.
An emotionally charged onstage blowout that took place place in Boston, MA of course changed all that, with Farrell initiating a physical altercation with Navarro onstage that later spilled over backstage. That incident spelled the end of the band’s reunion, with 3/4th of the multi-platinum group coming forward against Farrell, while Farrell himself went on to seek medical assistance for issues alleged to have impacted his his shaky performances on that run.
Navarro, Avery and Perkins went on to file a lawsuit against Farrell, claiming his actions resulted in the dissolution of the band, subsequently incurring them losses of over $10 million. The trio would further allege claims of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract against Farrell in that suit. They also went on to allege that Farrell repeatedly showed up to live performances intoxicated.
Farrell meanwhile filed a suit of his own against the trio, alleging they had targeted him with a campaign of harassment and bullying that persisted for years. He further went on to claim that the group would intentionally alter the levels of his in-ears during live performances to high volume and more. He further alleged that the group had violated their contract in the nature of which they boke up the band.
On December 17th of this year, the two parties separately issued statements on the matter, with a collective statement made on behalf of Navarro, Avery and Perkins reading as follows:
“We would like to clarify the events surrounding the cancellation of the tour after the show in Boston in September 2024.
After that show, without notice to Perry, we unilaterally determined it would be to not continue the tour and made inaccurate statements about Perry‘s mental health which we regret.
Today we are here to announce that we have come together one last time to resolve our differences, so that the legacy of Jane’s Addiction will remain the work the four of us created together.
We now look forward to the future as we embark on our separate musical and creative endeavors. Jane’s Addiction will forever live in our hearts. We are proud of the music we created together.
You, the fans, are our lifeblood, and we will always appreciate you.”
A statement issued by Farrell read as follows:
“To everyone in Boston, and around the world.
I’d like to address what happened on stage last year. I’ve reflected on it and know I didn’t handle myself the way I should have. I apologize to our patrons and my bandmates for losing my temper and for disrupting the show.
Jane’s Addiction has been at the center of my life for decades. The band, the songs, the patrons and the impact that we’ve had on music and culture mean more to me than any words I could ever possibly write down.
My aim has always been to give our audience the best possible show, something real, honest and positive. In Boston, we fell short of that, and I’m truly sorry to everyone who was impacted.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued love and support.
Perry Farrell“
As suspected, those statements appeared to be part of the terms of settlement to resolve the legal differences between the two parties. People have confirmed that several days after those statements were made, the two parties dismissed their respective lawsuits against each other on December 22nd.
While another attempt at reuniting Jane’s Addiction has been ruled out, Navarro, Avery & Perkins have since been spotted working in the studio together.
