According to his wife Etty, Jane’s Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell has been seeking out medical help following his onstage meltdown earlier this month. If you missed it, Perry now infamously erupted onstage during the band’s September 13th show in Boston, MA, getting into a physical altercation with guitarist Dave Navarro.
That incident saw Farrell forcibly restrained and removed from the stage, with the set coming to a close as a result. Sadly, it also saw the group’s classic era reunion tour, which only truly kicked off this past May, come to an inglorious end. Etty would go on to blame her husband’s behavior on his frustrations with his own vocal issues, problems with his hearing, and an unsatisfactory mix of the audio onstage. She outlined that in this follow-up post.
However, with Farrell having delivered a worryingly sloppy performance earlier that week, it was clear that his performance issues that night in Boston were unfortunately not an isolated incident. He had blamed vocal cord issues for that previous performance.
In the aftermath of the onstage altercation, the multi-platinum alternative rockers scrapped the tour and went on hiatus. However, a statement issued by the band sans Farrell that followed made it clear that Farrell‘s “mental health difficulties” were to blame. Farrell himself indirectly respond to that with an apology of his own. For his part, Navarro doesn’t seem too optimistic about another reunion from the band.
A post shared by Etty last night, September 21st, reveals that Perry will be meeting with an otolaryngologist (a doctor specializing in issues of ears nose and throat) and a neurologist. Etty stated:
“Beyond grateful and so very humbled we are, to all the dears that have taken the time to send us such beautiful words of love and support – checking in over and over again to make sure we are well taken care of. Offering love and compassion, words of kindness, and even your homes for us to escape to…
Like attracts like. Kindness attracts kindness. As you know, Perry is the gentlest of souls. We are equally astonished at Perry’s physical outburst as you are – but you must know that Perry must had been pushed to his absolute limit.. to that end we apologize.
We are taking a bit of time to ourselves, to reflect and to heal. Perry already has appointments with a otolaryngologist and a neurologist. If you know and love Perry well, you know there’s no need for me to address the other false narratives. Our souls know.
With all of your love, kindness, compassion and support, you know, Perry will persevere.. He will recover. He will be happy again. He will once again be able to share his music, vision and artistry – unbridled.
Make no mistake when he’s ready he will take another giant leap over obstacles to make us laugh, think, while changing the world together.
We can rejoice together then. And you will know, we would not have been able to do it without you.
