Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance/L.S. Dunes, etc. fame has slammed billionaire Elon Musk over a gesture the latter made during the inauguration celebrations of U.S. President Donald J. Trump yesterday, January 20th. Musk‘s highly controversial hand salute has been widely discussed since airing yesterday, with a vocal audience arguing it was a ‘sieg heil’ — a gesture used most infamously by the Nazi Party during the height of their power in the 1930/1940s.
Others have argued that the gesture was merely awkward and has been misinterpreted, citing Musk‘s early 2024 visit to Auschwitz as proof of his support of Jewish people. Musk‘s aforementioned visit to the former concentration camp followed in the wake of controversy over allegations of him allegedly endorsing antisemitism on X. Musk, for his part, would later apologize for that controversial comment.
Already one of the most scrutinized individuals on the planet, Musk aligned himself closely as a key supporter of President Trump during the latter’s successful bid for another term in the White House. He has also secured a position as an administrator of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency in Trump‘s new administration.
Musk for his part has seemingly brushed off the reaction to yesterday’s gesture, stating on X last night:
“Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The “everyone is Hitler” attack is sooo tired”
Taking to Instagram tonight, January 21st, Iero took aim at Musk over the controversial gesture, stating:
“Fuck this guy and every single person supporting this shit or wasting any kind of breath attempting to defend it. Your true colors are shining through. #SmashHate”
