Sacramento, CA alternative metal stars Deftones played their final scheduled show of 2024 last night, headlining their annual ‘Die de los Deftones‘ festival. This year’s edition of the fest was held November 02nd at Petco Park in San Diego, CA.
In a welcome return, guitarist Stephen Carpenter was back onstage with the band for his first live performance with them since this past April’s ‘Coachella Festival‘ in Indio Valley, CA.
Amid the pandemic, Carpenter opted to step back from international touring with the outfit, however, as this year has shown, a number of domestic stops in the United States have also been missed. Unspecified illness was blamed for his absence this past August. Carpenter himself opened up in July about his struggles with anxiety and how it has impacted his ability to tour.
For last night’s set, the multi-platinum group dug into their extensive catalog, serving up the first live performance of “Ghosts” by Japan. Their rendition of that 1981 new age track was one of a trio of covers originally exclusive to the iTunes edition of the band’s sixth studio album, 2010’s “Diamond Eyes“.
Outside of that surprise inclusion, “Lhabia“, “Beauty School” and “Hexagram” all got their first live airing since 2018. “Rickets” was also pulled off the shelf for it’s first playthrough since 2019.
The setlist for last night ran as follows:
“Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)”
“My Own Summer (Shove It)”
“Lhabia”
“Tempest”
“Swerve City”
“Beware”
“Beauty School”
“Diamond Eyes”
“Rx Queen”
“Rapture”
“Ghosts” (Japan cover) (live debut)
“976-EVIL”
“Hexagram”
“Rosemary”
“Headup”
“Around The Fur”
“Rickets”
“Change (In The House Of Flies)”
“Genesis”
Encore:
“7 Words”
Fans hoping for a first taste of what the group have cooked up for their upcoming tenth studio album will have to wait awhile longer it seems, as no new songs from it were debuted. Initial recording sessions for that record took place in Nashville, TN earlier this year with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters). Further vocal sessions followed in Oregon this past May. An exact release date, etc. is still being kept under wraps.
Early 2025 will find the band back out on the road taking their shot at filling out some rather large venues on a headlining tour with The Mars Volta & Fleshwater. That gamble seems to be paying off, with 15 of those 26 shows already sold out months in advance.
