Perry Farrell‘s isolated vocals during Jane’s Addiction‘s fateful September 13th show at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston, MA have been circulating online. Due to the now infamous violent altercation between Farrell and band guitarist Dave Navarro that transpired onstage that night, that concert brought an end to Jane’s Addiction‘s reunion tour.
Narration for this new audio/video clip was provided by Dan Cleary. The latter is a longtime friend of the multi-platinum alternative rockers, and he worked as the guitar/bass tech during that reunion tour. He was also onstage during the incident mentioned above.
In a recent episode of Cleary‘s Rare Form Radio podcast, Clearly outlined the situations that preceded that precipitated that blowout. Among some creative disagreements regarding tour production, were a string of rough performances from Farrell with the band ahead of that set.
Cleary recounted this extremely sloppy September 10th performance from Farrell in New York City as follows:
“The first [NYC] show was the worst show I’ve ever seen in my life — I’m not saying just with Jane’s; it was the worst show I’ve ever seen… He didn’t know where he was in the songs. He didn’t know the words. He was singing words from other songs. These are not sound issues. … And also, he had a bunch of fantastic shows throughout the tour. The sound doesn’t change — we’re the same all the time.”
Farrell said from the stage during the NYC show that he had been having issues with his vocals. As for the September 13th show, according to Cleary, the band had become increasingly worried about Farrell‘s ability to perform as the concert went on.
After several missed parts or singing at the wrong time, guitarist Dave Navarro was said to have approached Farrell onstage and informed him that he was going to do his guitar solo, after Farrell mistakenly sang over where it originally should have been. This appeared to incense Farrell.
As the show continued to spiral out, the rest of the band sans Farrell were said to have huddled together to see what they could do to salvage the rest of the set, which only served to agitate Farrell even further. Ultimately, Farrell‘s tensions boiled over 11 songs in, resulting in the much publicized blowout.
In the wake of the incident, Farrell‘s wife Etty Lau Farrell issued a statement, blaming the poor showing from her husband at the Boston show on issues with his voice, tinnitus, and a poor mix of sound onstage.
While Farrell was seen shoving guitarist Dave Navarro onstage in the altercation, he was eventually restrained by the group’s bassist Eric Avery, who put Farrell in a headlock and is said to have delivered several punches to him in an attempt to distract/calm him. Later on backstage, after the show was called off, Perry allegedly punched Navarro.
The onstage fracas led the group to announce an end to their reunion tour, which was only several months in at that point with its classic reunited lineup. Perry would go on to issue an apology, while his bandmates would express their concern for his “mental health difficulties.”
Perry‘s wife later revealed that Perry had booked appointments with an otolaryngologist (a doctor specializing in issues of ears nose and throat) and a neurologist in a bid to get to the bottom of his issues.
The isolated clip of Perry‘s performance that night can be seen below and originated on Cleary’s aforementioned podcast:
