Producer/musician Butch Vig (Garbage, etc.) invited Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham down to the Foo Fighters‘ Studio 606 in Los Angeles, CA to craft three compositions together. The below video documents those sessions, while also serving as a showcase for the 7 series of Roland‘s V-Drums and DW Soundworks software.
On top of that, those sessions find Vig reunited with the Neve recording console he used to produce Nirvana‘s 1991 diamond-certified grunge behemoth, “Nevermind“. Vig also professed his fandom of Cunningham‘s long-running alternative metal outfit amid the sessions.
While Vig has been known to embrace cutting edge electronic technology within his music, this dip into virtual drumming was by no means unfamiliar territory for Cunningham. He has been a V-Drums enthusiast for decades now, stating of that:
“I got my first V-Drums kit in 1999 when we were trying to write what became our third record, ‘White Pony‘. I had been hearing about them coming out, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to get one of these.'”
