Ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer Facing Wrongful Death Lawsuit Following March 2024 Traffic Accident

Ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghofer has been named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed today, July 10th. The suit alleges that the 44-year-old Klinghofer fatally struck 47-year-old Israel Sanchez with his GMC Yukon SUV in Alhambra, CA on March 18th of of 2024.

The complaint alleges that Klinghoffer was distracted on his phone at the time of the incident and that Sanchez later succumbed to blunt force trauma from injuries sustained in the accident. The complaint further alleges that Klinghoffer was driving without plates at the time.

A copy of that complaint has since emerged online, with Israel‘s daughter Ashley Sanchez filing it. She alleges that Klinghoffer struck her father on a cross walk, making no effort to brake in advance until her father was physically hit. The suit further alleges that Klinghoffer never contacted the family after the incident, and has “shown no remorse” since the incident.

Klinghoffer is not the only individual named in the suit, with up to 20 other yet to be identified individuals associated with Klinghoffer also being listed. According to the complaint, local surveillance footage of the incident has been obtained for use as evidence in the complaint, for which a jury trial is being sought. That footage has since been shared by TMZ.

Ashley is alleging negligence and wrongful death against Klinghoffer and is seeking damages for pain and suffering, medical costs, legal fees and more. An attorney for Klinghoffer commented to Rolling Stone on the accident:

“This was a tragic accident. After which, Josh immediately pulled over, stopped the vehicle, called 911, and waited until police and the ambulance arrived. He is fully cooperating with the traffic investigation.”

Since parting ways with the Red Hot Chili Peppers back in 2019, Klinghoffer has served primarily as a touring musician, appearing with Pearl Jam and Jane’s Addiction. He went on to tour with Pearl Jam in the weeks after the accident.
