A New Live Pantera Album From Their Reunion Touring May Arrive In The Future

The current incarnation of Pantera may be releasing a live album down the line. The legendary Texan groove metal band’s career originally came to an end in the early 2000s, after bitter infighting tore the lineup into separate camps.

The tragic 2004 onstage murder of guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and several others, paired with the already high tensions between drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott and vocalist Phil Anselmo, ultimately saw the group remain dormant for nearly two decades. Vinnie Paul was frequently vocal about his animosity for Anselmo during that period, ensuring that the band remained inactive. Vinnie Paul would eventually pass in 2018 from heart-related issues.

With the public blessings of the estates of the late Abbott brothers, Anselmo and bassist/vocalist Rex Brown would go on to reform the storied group in 2022. Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne) was brought on to to handle the guitars and Charlie Benante (Anthrax, etc.) assumed the drumming duties. Both musicians had long-standing relationships with the surviving members of group and their own departed counterparts.

According to Benante, this current lineup of the group have been recording various shows along their ongoing reunion touring and may eventually compile them into a future live release. An interview with The Vinyl Guide Podcast saw Benante speak on the possibility of a live effort being in the pipeline:

“We talked about that. We’ll see. We record a lot, and it’s probably just spending time with it and see what shows are good, or take a song from this show or a song from that show and compile it for a live record. I would love to do that.”
