Deftones’ Stephen Carpenter Discusses His Musical Evolution In New Mini-Documentary, Reveals His Favorite Band Of Thrash Metal’s ‘Big Four’

Stephen Carpenter, guitarist for renowned alternative metal icons Deftones, is the subject of the latest episode of Ernie Ball‘s ‘String Theory‘ mini-documentary series. In the below episode, you can watch him discuss his own musical journey and evolution as well as that of the band’s, while also playing through several of their songs.

Amid the doc, Carpenter also reveals that his favorite thrash metal band out of the so called ‘Big Four’ (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax) were not from his native California, but in fact were East Coast heavy hitters, Anthrax. His penchant for the group came in part due to his own inclination towards rhythm guitar rather than lead. He said of that:

“Of the ‘Big Four’, Anthrax was my favorite. I really did love Metallica of course too. But Anthrax was my favorite. And I really specifically loved Scott Ian as a rhythm player. I had zero desire to play a solo. I just wanted to crunch it up.”

This spring is set to see Deftones return to the road for their rescheduled U.S. tour with Gojira and newly added openers Vowws.
