The 1998 book ‘Lords Of Chaos‘ is headed to the big screen with actors Rory Culkin (‘Scream 4‘) and Caleb Landry Jones (‘X-Men: First Class‘) both attached to star. The book focuses on the early 90’s black metal scene, but more specifically focuses on Mayhem. The groups turbulent early career saw their vocalist Dead take his own life, while former bassist Varg Vikernes stabbed guitarist Øystein ‘Euronymous’ Aarseth to death.
There was also the wave of church burnings the band were connected to as well as media outrage and violence that surrounded the band black metal culture during the first half of the 90’s. Though some due diligence was done in hiring filmmaker (and one-time Bathory drummer) Jonas Åkerlund (who has since gone on to make films as well as videos for Metallica, Madonna) to direct the picture, as well as co-write the screenplay, it will not be supported by Mayhem themselves.
Bassist Necrobutcher—who has been collaborating on a script for the band’s story with Norwegian based Motion Blur—had few kind words for the rival production, telling Rollingstone.com:
“This book Lords of Chaos is fucking crap and that some stupid Swedes are gonna make a movie out of it is not OK. I will do everything I can to stop this film…. Tell the Swedes and the Hollywood people to go fuck themselves.”
Necrobutcher, also known as Jørn Stubberud, claims that Motion Blur have the legal rights to the bands story.
