In This Moment’s Maria Brink Gets Naked For “Whore” Single

In This Moment frontwoman Maria Brink has decided to go nude for the groups new single “Whore“. The image released for the single can be seen below with Brink claiming she isn’t using her sexuality as a marketing tool.

In the past Brink has been quoted saying that she aims to take back the word ‘whore’, giving it the meaning of “Women Honoring One another Rising Eternally”. Speaking on her decision to forgo clothing in the below promotional picture, she stated:

“I decided to pose nude for the visual art for ‘Whore’ to evoke a raw vulnerable emotion. The word Whore written down my back, and the dunce cap symbolize me placing myself on the stake for those who are suffering and I can only hope to encourage at least one person to find the self worth and love they deserve to transcend out of a painful situation into a beautiful one. It is about finding our power and taking a stand. We are resilient beings and need to realize our incredible strengths. I will not bow down to others perceptions of me; I will only rise in the name of art, love and music.”

Band guitarist Chris Howorth added:

“One of the best things about the song ‘Whore‘ is all the feelings and thoughts that the word alone provokes, and that’s great, but at the end of the day, it’s just a word. The only power it really has is the power that we give it. It’s really just about taking the power back from the word, and when you get past all the controversy of the word, you have a bombastic rock and roll song with crushing guitars and huge drums that will have you screaming whore at the top of your lungs! Listen with your heart!”

The Butcher Babies: In This Moment are insulting on so many levels.

    • jrr

If the first comment here was anything but this, I’d’ve been extremely disappointed.

      • Blackmoon

I really hope The Butcher Babies are joking, and that you are being sarcastic. This comment allegedly made by them couldn’t be more idiotic.

For one thing In This Moment is listed as one of their influences on Wiki. You’d think if they really have some problem with the band they’d fix that themselves. It is editable by anyone, and you’d think they’d be aware of what’s on their own wiki page.

Regardless, here we have Butcher Babies, a group with a blatantly offensive name that surely rose to fame in no small part due to its two pornstar-like singers and their near topless stage show. None of which I personally have any problem with. What I have a problem with is the dripping irony and hypocrisy of such artists (who only just released their first album) having the gall to call a far more established act with far less overt sexuality “insulting” because of an ad like this.

I swear, some people just don’t think before they open their mouths.

Maria can fuck off for saying she’s not using her sexuality as a marketing tool and trying to pawn herself off as some sort of martyr for those who have been called a whore or have been verbally oppressed for the way they dress/conduct themselves. You know what’s a great way to market yourself? By appealing to the demographic that isn’t instantly attracted by a pair of tits behind a microphone. Pray on the comradery of women who are verbally and physically assaulted daily based on their appearance who aren’t making a living based on exactly that, aka Maria’s whole schtick. With this little marketing stunt she gets to keep and increase the male fan base while reaching out to the largely untapped female demographic in the metal scene by saying she is standing/speaking up for them. I know it’s a weird line to straddle what being confident in you’re sexuality and embracing it while not being considered a whore/sexual object. But when you’re appearing in Playboy articles and Hottest Women in Rock pieces and are promoting your band through said publications you’re not helping the cause. You’re just promoting the objectification to cash in and for that Maria you are the biggest fucking whore out there.

It’s a really hard issue to go about discussing and debating about because I am speaking here from the male perspective but I feel like this is a clear cut case of Maria using her sexuality as a promotional tool and trying to play it off like it empowers women.

    • Vautour

      TL;DR: Dat ass.

    • RUREADY2JIGGLE?

Good god mang, squeeze one out once in a while. Release the poison.

Nobody with half a brain took this band seriously in the first place.

    • MyDarkPassenger

20 likes for this? It’s a bit overstated if you ask me.

      • MyDarkPassenger

And Blumpkin just solved the riddle. Otep signed up for 20 different acounts just to give her first 20 thumbs up’s on this site.

    • Blackmoon

I’ve got some news for you: generally speaking, the heavy metal crowd is EXACTLY the sort of demographic that is most likely to be attracted to a pair of tits behind a microphone.

If the band wasn’t worth a damn they wouldn’t be selling albums. I bought their shit because I like it, and that had nothing to do with her tits. But I’ll be perfectly honest when I tell you that I probably never would have listened to their music if her looks hadn’t enticed me to give them a shot. If the music sucked I would have written them off entirely. Sex doesn’t sell music. Music sells music.

I like to support women in metal. Bottom line. Generally any female singer will entice me to at least give the band a try. That’s an advantage no all male act has. There’s nothing wrong with that, and it certainly can’t hurt to have that sort of edge. At the end of the day it’s about whether the music has value.

So what do you care if she markets herself? For one thing that’s only your perspective. That’s not the way Maria saw or intended it. And even if it were it’s her body and her business. Who the hell are you to judge her? You “speak from the male perspective”? Well until your dick falls off and your balls cave into a uterus I don’t think you belong tearing her a new one over her concept of empowerment.

Btw, I believe “prey” and “camaraderie” were the words you were looking for Mr. Intellectual Feminist.

      • http://comingupmilhouse.com/ Ganglor

Where in my comment did I say the heavy metal crowd IS NOT the demographic that would be most attracted by a pair of tits? I believe I said that with this nude publicity photo she gets to keep and increase the male fan base. My whole argument is her using that fact to her advantage while pandering to women (who are not as easily won over) in the metal scene by saying she’s using it to speak out for the poor treatment/objectification of women aka being called a whore and other hurtful things while she’s actually further encouraging that said act. Maybe you should go back and reread my comment a little more carefully.

And sex doesn’t sell music? Really? You want to explain Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj etc? Album sales may not be solely attributed to using sex, but to say it’s not a factor is just ignorant.

That said I am in the same boat with you when it comes to supporting women in metal. I hope that in the near future we can look at the metal scene as something other than a boys club. Also I am a sucker for the combination of the brashness of metal with female vocals, which I feel have a broader range.

Now…What do I care if she markets herself like this? Why do I feel like I can judge seeing as how I don’t have a uterus? Maybe it’s because I have been surrounded by the mistreatment and cheapening of women for the majority of my life. Maybe it’s because multiple members of my extended family have been victims of sexual assault. Maybe it’s the amount of claims my sister responded to while working at a sexual assault center. Maybe it’s because years later my former girlfriend worked at the same center and the amount of nights where she was called in at four in the morning to respond to sexual assault cases and wouldn’t get back home from the hospital until two in the afternoon were astronomical. Maybe it’s because I’ve had to defend my female friends multiple times from being harassed just while walking to friends’ houses. Maybe it’s because I’ve bought multiple canisters of mace and tasers for friends and former roommates because it’s not safe for them to walk alone at night. And you know what, if that’s not enough experience I even said in my comment that it’s a hard issue to discuss and debate about because I am speaking from the male perspective. So yeah, I know I don’t have experience from a first person perspective but from the position of onlooker I have an overabundance of experience to the point I feel as though I can at least resonate (not judge) the general feeling of women from that position. So to answer the question of why I care that this is the way she markets herself is because as WE BOTH AGREE WITH members of the metal scene are generally attracted to a pair of tits behind a microphone (I wish I never used that terminology) so she continues to pander to that scene while trying to pawn off this marketing stunt by saying she’s doing it for women and like she’s sticking her neck for her fellow (<- HA!) woman while all she is really doing is making bank and perpetuating the idea as a woman as a "thing." Google image search "In This Moment Band" or "Maria Brink" and tell me that’s someone whose advocating the end to the objectification of women. Ninety percent of those photos involve cleavage and lifting up the front of her skirt with the rest of the band at least six feet in the background. If that doesn’t scream, “look at what we’re selling boys, go get it!” I don’t know what does. Well…Maybe Spinal Tap’s classic “Smell The Glove” but I digress, hahaha. And don’t get me wrong I don’t have anything against women dressing the way they want (that’s actually what I am pushing for here) it’s just when sex is the product being sold on album covers, calendars, and magazine covers/articles etc I feel it’s the furthest thing away from empowering.

TO BOIL IT DOWN TO A SIMPLE TL;DR – MARIA, DON’T SPIT IN SOMEONE’S FACE AND TELL THEM IT’S RAINING.

P.S. – Yeah, I spelled some words wrong in my first comment and probably this one as well. Also there are probably some run on sentences and incorrect punctuation marks. I like how that last sentence you wrote sounds like you think I am trying to be smug when I am just trying to have some sort of back and forth about the subject. So you trying to ding me points for misspellings like that negates my opinion is real classy. Nice move dickhole.

    • revstevo

you lost me at “Maria can fuck”…
i got a little distracted at that point

    • Blackmoon

First of all bro, as it pertains to the “sex sells music argument”, I was talking about rock and roll/heavy metal, not bullshit pop music. But even if I were, the music is still what matters. Girls aren’t buying Miley Cyrus albums because they want to get dirty with her, and I highly doubt there are any guys lining up to buy music they don’t listen to just so they can jerk off to the cd jacket.

If you think I’m interested in reading an essay that long about all the stories of sexual assault and related incidents in you’re life you’re delusional. It’s commonplace. I get it. That’s a well known fact. I don’t need you to give me 50 examples to get that message across. You know a lot of women who’ve been abused. That’s all you needed to say. I don’t really see how much that has to do with this topic anyway.

The bottom line is you have no problem with Maria showing off her body, but you take issue with her claiming that it’s a message of empowerment because you consider it a contradiction. Again, that’s your perspective.

Consider this: many women are sexually assaulted and objectified, yes. Many OTHER women have used that same objectification to obtain wealth and power. Neither of these are things that should be endorsed, but the point I’m making is that there are two sides to the coin. Some women (many women) take pride in their looks and are not offended by come-ons in the least. Some women aren’t even bothered by words like “whore”.

“It is about finding our power and taking a stand. We are resilient beings and need to realize our incredible strengths. I will not bow down to others perceptions of me”

“it’s just a word. The only power it really has is the power that we give it. It’s really just about taking the power back from the word”

Maria claims she is not using her sexuality to market the band. Whether that’s true or not, she never said anything about opposing objectification so it makes no sense for you accuse her of making a false claim in that regard. It makes even less sense to accuse her of encouraging “poor treatment” of women. She’s proud of her beauty and has every right to be. Men who are shitbags weren’t made that way by the sight of female flesh. The only real cause of an abusive/predatory personality are the emotional and psychological problems resulting from said individual’s environment and personal experiences. One thing that really pisses me off about this topic is how often people point the finger of blame at the wrong party. It’s like validating the rapist logic: “It’s her fault for what she was wearing.”

But, oh wait, that’s not what you’re saying right? Because you’re pushing for women to wear what they want? But you also claim that Maria Brink doing so contributes to poor treatment and objectification. You’re contradicting yourself. You can’t have it both ways.

The irony here is that Maria talks about taking power back from the word whore and here you are lambasting her for being just that. Based on her assertion do you think she would actually give a shit?

I didn’t pick apart your spelling to negate your opinion. Nothing negates an opinion. That’s why it’s an opinion. I did it because I find it insulting when someone gets holier-than-thou about something and decides to start flexing their vocabulary muscle without checking spelling, grammar, and/or context. Call it a pet peeve.

As far as your claim of “just trying to have some back and forth” I call big time bullshit. You clearly have a huge bug up your ass about the topic, as evident by your extremely lengthy rants. Nothing about what you said implies interest in conflicting opinion or discussion.

      • http://comingupmilhouse.com/ Ganglor

The correlation between sex and music sales isn’t as simple as they’re going to spend $14 to touch themselves to the CD jacket picture. Some girls buy these albums because the way those female artists are sold is that they’re a man’s dream woman. And during those impressionable teen years when girls overemphasize the importance of having a boyfriend they want to emulate the idea of a man’s perfect woman from a visual standpoint and also a lyrical standpoint. And after the last couple of Rihanna songs I have heard…well shit they shouldn’t be doing that kind of stuff when they’re not old enough to even understand it. Anyway, that all adds to music sales in the end. And then there are clear-cut cases like boy band booms like One Direction (and back in the day LFO…or N*Sync if you’re not into Summer Girls). Sex sells and that is a fact. Talk to any advertising agency and they’ll tell you the same thing.

As for the reason why I listed all of the experiences I have had with the mistreatment and abuse of women is to explain why I am so angered by the fact that someone would come out trying to say they are taking a stand in defense of women against the word “whore” while what she is really doing is just pushing the objectification even more just to further her band to make a buck. Did you Google Image search like I suggested? Seriously, give it a shot and tell me I am wrong. Also, as for your comment about it being commonplace and that it’s a well know fact you couldn’t be more wrong. If it were common knowledge there wouldn’t be television commercials, billboards, radio ads, mailers, and hell even Smartphone apps trying to increase public knowledge about verbal and physical abuse on the streets, at parties, and in relationships. I am pretty sure you’d be hard pressed to find someone off the street that knows a sexual assault happens every two minutes or even close to that often.

Here, lets do something that hasn’t been done yet here and lets dissect the actual promo picture. It’s a nude picture of her wearing a dunce cap with “whore” scrawled down her back with a little blurb of the chorus saying, “you love me for everything you hate me for.” Seeing as how it can be surmised that the promo photo isn’t going to be accompanied by her “we’re taking it back” explanation lets look at it from the eyes of your every day person. With the contrast of white to red the first thing that stands out is there is a band or movie called In This Moment and it’s a story or song about a whore. Upon further inspection one notices the dunce cap so it’s a movie or song about a stupid whore. Well all right then; oh look, a little blurb in the bottom right hand corner which looks like where a movie review quote would go. Okay, so based on the blurb this is a movie or song about a stupid whore who you love for the same reasons you hate her for. THAT DOESN’T SEND ANY SORT OF GOD DAMN MESSAGE. It doesn’t make you think about the subject more, it’s telling you what you think or are supposed to think and that’s that. IT’S MEANT FOR PROMOTION PURPOSES FOR THE BAND. In Maria’s head sure it might seem like she’s taking an artistic stand but to any other person who sees it all they are going to think is ooohhh or ewww, naked woman and associate In this Moment with the word “whore”. This is advertising at it’s finest/lowest depending on who you ask and nothing more.

And while at no point does she say she is against the objectification of women but shouldn’t she? I guess not apparently because all she is “fighting for” is to take away the meaning/power of the word whore. Saying that the word whore has no power or meaning to a woman doesn’t lead to the word being used less but used more because no one is saying it’s not okay anymore and no matter what the word will always carry power despite what some might say or think

As for the back and forth of opinions, I feel as though after almost three weeks of sitting on the subject I came to a concrete conclusion that the whole “meaning” behind the picture is just an excuse to justify the sexual content of the promo picture. And based on the thumbs up count and the lack of any direct replies contrary to mine up until now paints a pretty clear picture. Especially on a site viewed mostly buy a male audience, which based on the rules of the Internet would thumbs down it and tell me to shut the fuck up.

And yeah, I do have a huge bug up my ass and for good reason. All of those experiences that I listed in my prior comment are the reason for said bug. When you help women who have gone through that abuse and you just feel absolutely terrible about it and you know what those women are going through is a million times worse than how bad I feel then you’re going to get fucking bothered by some two-faced woman who says she’s trying to help women progress when that’s the opposite of what she’s doing

Also, I have been using my normal vocabulary the entire time. I also actually spell out all of my words in my text messages (we do exist). It’s just that I am not going to go out of my way to comb through a comment for errors when the text box is this God damn small and when it’s so long that maybe eight people will read this.

Her acronym is idiotic and so is the idea of taking back the word ‘whore.’ ‘Whore’ is not on the same level as a racial or sexual slur. “Brink claiming she isn’t using her sexuality as a marketing tool” – of course, just like she doesn’t go onstage with the typical “slutty maid”, “slutty nurse”, etc halloween costumes to attract attention towards that same sexuality. Or like Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines video tries to celebrate the beauty in every woman’s inner world. Or how Miley Cyrus is the female, caucasian Gandhi.

Maria Bink is totally against objectification of women. Which is why her stage attire is just different lingerie. And when on Uproar last year there was a sign at In This Moment’s merch tent that read “Polaroid Picture + Hug From Maria =$10″. In This Moment have gone from shitty radio rock to shitty metalcore to shitty electronicore. They are versitaile at sucking in different genres. Although, Maria’s inability to sing live at all only strengthens their sucking plethora.

Maria’s acronym fails in that it’s far too verbose and includes an unrepresented word in the meaning. It isn’t W.H.O.R.E. it’s W.H.O.A.R.E, which isn’t a word. I’ve always found that kind of thing annoying. If you can’t fully say what you’re trying to say with the letters you have it’s time to drop the idea and stop trying to fit a square peg in the round hole.

Aside from that failure I completely respect the sentiment and intent behind the idea, and the sight of her like this certainly doesn’t bother me in the least.

The word whore is a joke in the first place. Throughout history promiscuous women have been demonized and treated like garbage. Yet how often is a lecherous man so openly and heavily criticized? Lecher is a word rarely even heard, though it is about the closest male equivalent. In my opinion nobody’s sex life is anybody’s business but their own. Not unless they’re spreading disease.
