Deftones Vocalist Chino Moreno Joins Ex-Isis Members In Palms

Deftones, etc. frontman Chino Moreno has been revealed as the vocalist for Palms. The group are a new outfit featuring ex-Isis members Aaron Harris, Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide. The bands debut offering will be released through Ipecac Recordings later this year and was recorded and mixed by Harris with the band overseeing the production duties.

Aaron Harris spoke on the group:

Clifford, Jeff and I started Palms a little over a year ago out of a desire to continue making music together after ISIS ended. Chino joined shortly after and our sound took shape from there. We’ve worked really hard on this first release and are excited for people to hear it. It’s nice to be back behind the drum kit, and with this line up.”

Chino Moreno offered:

“Being a huge ISIS fan I’ve always dug the moods these dudes convey with their sound. I am excited to combine my sense of creativity with theirs, and to have fun doing so.”

      • Collaborations are risky: my thing is I know Chinos “contributions” can dominate a mix, making it sound like a lesser Deftones song….not a bad thing, just sayin…
So I hope there is some separation of the parts in the sum. You know, like “Lulu”, but good.

        • Would be cool if they worked with a different singer for each recording session. I just don’t see how the band would work all that well with Chino’s commitments to other groups.

I am in total shock. I’m as skeptical as I am horny. This has potential to be one of the best things I’ve ever heard. I just hope they don’t lose any intensity without MGR and Turner. They both came from fairly metallic backgrounds so I hope it’s not boring shoe-gaze without them. Hopefully Cliffs guitar stays in Drop B.

Isis-esque songs with Chino doing the screaming kitty thing over them? Welp, I’ll just be putting my dick in the mashed potatoes cause evidently it’s gonna be that kind of bad-ass party.

I’ll take “can’t spell worth dick” for $1200, Alex. They never have a $500 question, by the way.

I’m going into this with an open mind like Crosses.

I think it’s impossible for this project to fail. Worst case scenario is it sounds like Deftones vocals over Isis tunes. Best case scenario is I hear it and jizz and shit myself simultaneously, appearing as if I was receiving a blumpkin from a ghost.

    • You guys give Chino too much credit as a vocalist. Sure he sounds good with the Deftones but he’s average at best outside the band. There is A LOT of studio vocal effect to make that guy sound good on recordings. You want to argue that? Go see the Deftones live, watch any live video, etc. and see how shitty of a singer he really is. As Deftones fans, I’m sure most of you have already witness how crappy he sounds and will vehemently deny the fact until your final breath.

With that being said, I really want to hear this.

I really believe that the singer’s grunting vocals held Isis back from being a great band, and getting big on a commercial level. If they’d been fronted by a Maynard or Mike Patton, someone who could sing, Isis could have been amazing and massive.

So you are saying that Isis isn’t a great band? I’m pretty sure a major amount of people would disagree with you on this. Not to mention the fact this band had one of the biggest followings in the last decade for underground music of this sort.

        • Unlike Patton, we (the fans/observers) don’t really know as much about his creative process. Chino just generates material without giving much of an insight into his involvement and input. He’s a lot more mysterious. I still think he spearheads a lot of it, however. He’s not as prolific as a Mike Patton…but. Who knows? Patton is just more obvious about it all. He has the loud and proud mindset of”I am a dictator and you will bow down to my musical genius and ingenuity feeble plebs!”.

Chino Moreno is an animal that could be classified as ‘One of A Kind’. Mike Patton on the other hand gets on my fucking nerves. He tries way too hard to be weird. He also thinks that he is smarter than every other person on the planet.. Chino is like ” Yeah, I love the Cure and the Smiths.” Patton is like, ” I am too smart to listen to those bands.” Patton continues, ” I hate anything that is new and exciting! Faith No More is just a way for me to make money.” End of story.

Thank you sir. I fear that an Isis sound mixed with atmospheric Deftones enlightenment may just overwhelm the cosmos. Not bore it to death like another Patton abomination. What the world reallly needs is a new Team Sleep record but that is beside the point.

I agree with above comments on Patton material being hit or miss for a decade + now and a sifting through process is necessary where once it was not, however I really appreciate what is released through Ipecac so that makes up for it in my opinion – I really look forward to Palms and do not think these cats are capable of a clunker on this project at all…
