Controversial black metal musician Kristian “Varg” Vikernes (Burzum, ex-Mayhem) has been arrested in France on suspicions of intending to commit a large scale terrorist act.
Authorities have taken both Vikernes and his wife Marie Cachet into custody today, July 16th, after his wife purchased four rifles. However, it was also noted that his wife is a member of a shooting club and purchased the firearms legally.
The French authorities appear to have taken special interested in Vikernes‘ receiving the manifesto from Anders Behring Breivik prior to his 2011 killing spree in Norway. The French Interior Minister Manuel Valls commented on the case, stating:
“Having received the manifesto before [Anders Behring Breivik] committed his crimes and having been sentenced in Norway in the past for murder, this individual, who was close to a neo-Nazi movement, was likely to prepare a large terrorist act.”
The authorities also went on to search through Vikernes home for more firearms and explosives. Vikernes has a well documented past of murder, arson, racism and more. Further details on the arrest are available via a report at Euronews.com.
