Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial on the charge of attempted first-degree murder he currently faces. That charge stems from a violent incident that took place with William Yates, the 79-year-old father of Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates. Ebert stands accused of running down William in his automobile outside the Yates residence, striking William and leaving his leg severely broken.
A past police report indicated that the altercation followed a heated verbal exchange said to have been initiated by Ebert. Home security footage is said to have captured some of the incident. It was also said to be the latest in a string of increasingly hostile altercations claimed to have been initiated by Ebert towards the Yates family.
Ebert was acrimoniously fired from Turnstile back in 2022. Ebert has thus far continued to deny the charges, arguing that the police report is a “lie” and that he acted in “self defense”. Earlier this month, Ebert was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation to assess whether or not he was fit to stand trial. Now, per The Banner, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Karla Smith has deemed Ebert mentally incompetent and classified him as a danger to himself.
He was remanded to the Maryland Department Of Health and his competency for the potential trial will be reevaluated during a January 19th hearing. Ebert is said to have been combative during this latest hearing in the case, shouting and stating that he had fired his legal representation, who was in attendance at the court.
He is said to have further claimed that the case was an “extreme miscarriage of justice” and continued to dispute the police’s handling of the case. His attorney Mark Sobel went on to state of his client, “Hopefully, he’ll get the proper treatment for his competency to be restored, so we can proceed to trial in this case.”
