Iowan masked metal phenomenon Slipknot played their first show of 2025 last night, kicking off their ‘Knotfest Australia‘ run in Melbourne, Australia. As a special treat, that set served up a live debut for the band’s track “Gematria (The Killing Name)“. That deeper cut from the band’s catalog first saw a release as part of their platinum-certified 2008 album “All Hope Is Gone“. Fan-filmed footage of this first list airing of it has since been shared online below.
Back in 2023, the group’s frontman Corey Taylor told All Things Music how unlikely it was for this song to be played live, stating:
“I’ve always wanted to open a concert with ‘Gematria‘. There are certain odiums around the way that that song was created and recorded, which is why some of the guys in the band are like, ‘Fuck that, we’ll never play it.’
[The reason] isn’t even sentimental…It’s resentment. But for me, man, it’s such a fucking burner that I just love that song. I can listen to that shit all fucking day. It just comes screaming out of no-fucking-where. But it’ll never happen. Unless the pope ends up opening up for Slipknot someday, that shit will never happen.”
A notable development for this show was the absence of percussionist M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan, who apparently missed the concert due to a family emergency. Last night’s setlist ran as follows:
“(sic)”
“People = Shit”
“Gematria (The Killing Name)”
“Wait And Bleed”
“No Life”
“Yen”
“Tattered & Torn” (Sid remix)
