Accomplished jazz drummer Eric Harland was recently introduced to a song from nü-metal pioneers Korn. Drumeo asked the NYC-based musician to come up with his own parts for the band’s biggest hit, “Freak On A Leash“. That track is of course from the group’s 5x multi-platinum 1998 album, “Follow The Leader“.
In addition to Harland not having heard the song before, he was introduced to a version of it featuring the percussion removed. With no pre-existing drumming to influence his approach, he was given a blank slate to come up with his own parts for the song.
In a bold decision that falls in line with his genre wheelhouse, he chose to do a single take improvisation. You can see what he came up with for it below:
