Melodic hardcore stars Turnstile have debuted an in-studio cover of British indie rockers The Stone Roses‘ 1989 single “I Wanna Be Adored” for Australian radio station Triple J. The newly two-time GRAMMY Award-wining outfit covered that song for Triple J‘s long-running Like A Version series of performances. During their time in the studio, Turnstile also delivered a live performance of their own track “SUNSHOWER“.
Addressing the decision to cover The Stone Roses, Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates offered, “I love this song. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s unconventional and simple and very just beautiful.”
Guitarist Meg Mills added, “And [it has] one of the most iconic basslines of all time. I think it’s so powerful in its simplicity.” Mills, who hails from the UK, went on to explain her longtime admiration for The Stone Roses, describing them as, “Probably the coolest of all the Manchester bands coming out at that time.”
She also relayed that the cover was in part chosen as a tribute to The Stone Roses‘ late bassist Gary “Mani” Mournfield, who died in November of 2025 from long-term respiratory issues. Yates also went on to explain Turnstile‘s approach to covers as well, stating [transcribed by theprp.com]:
“We’ve done covers for years. Typically, we’ve not recorded a lot of them, but we’ve done a lot of covers, different covers live, different bands. But this was a different experience ’cause we actually kind of got to actually lay it down in a studio. And it was cool. It felt good to kind of… especially when on tour and you’re playing your songs every night, to break from that and and play someone else’s.”
