Maynard James Keenan, vocalist of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, has shared his thoughts on his indirect involvement in Alex Honnold‘s death-defying climb up the side of the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan last month. Honnold completed that record-breaking feat on January 25th, 2026 without the use of ropes. His roughly hour and a half ascent was live broadcast via Netflix.
As for how Keenan got roped into the stunt, Honnold revealed shortly after the climb that he had put together a playlist that notably was comprised largely of songs from Tool. That playlist was recently shared publicly and indeed sported 8 songs from the Tool catalog, including “Forty Six & 2“, “Ænema“, “The Grudge“, “Lateralus“, “Schism“, “Parabola“, “Invincible” and “Pneuma“.
Other artists to make the cut for that playlist included the likes of Linkin Park, NOTHING MORE, The Used, Chevelle, The Offspring & Senses Fail. Speaking with ABC regarding Honnold‘s accomplishment and unwittingly providing the majority of the soundtrack for it, Keenan joked, “Not everybody and their mother texted me every three seconds telling me about it or anything.”
He went on to say, “What the heck were you thinking, dude? It’s impressive! It’s extremely impressive, but, I mean, I wouldn’t make it past the first floor. I would fall to my death.”
When asked if Keenan would offer a more direct role in a potential future climb from Honnold, Keenan went on to add, “I’ll be the guy down below eating french fries making fun of him.” Yesterday, February 06th, saw the official release of Puscifer‘s latest studio album, “Normal Isn’t“.
