Mudvayne's Matt McDonough On The Resurgence Of Metal's Once Most-Hated Subgenre: "Maybe The World Just Is Ready To Come To A Nu Metal Show"

The resurgence in interest in nü-metal that has swept up new generations of listeners since the pandemic years has been a boon for many stars of the old guard of the once much maligned genre. As such, recent years have seen a cavalcade of returning artists, with the likes of Mudvayne, Primer 55, Spineshank, Dry Kill Logic and more having all returned to active duty.

Given their considerable commercial success before they went on hiatus in 2010, the return of Mudvayne was one of the more anticipated reunions to emerge amid the nü-metal renaissance. Following a series of tours, the last few months have seen the band release their first two new singles in 16 years. Furthermore, they are currently out celebrating 25 years of their gold-certified debut album “L.D. 50“.

That run finds them paired with another resurrected outfit from nü-metal’s heyday: Static-X, who are taking their latest victory lap on their own 2000 debut album “Wisconsin Death Trip” on that trek. Relative newcomers Vended serve as the opening act for those dates.

In a recent conversation with Talk Toomey, hosted by Primer 55‘s Josh Toomey, Mudvayne drummer Matt McDonough reflected on the renewed popularity Mudvayne and his peers from the early 2000s have been having, while begin cognizant of the fact that his band could now rightfully fall under the classic rock genre.

“The strange renaissance of that time period, it’s almost like we’re the classic rock now. Back in 2019, 2020, when we first started talking about a reunion, I was, like, ‘No one’s even gonna remember us. Who’s actually gonna come out?’ And the response for those first festivals, the DWP festivals, was just a absolutely surreal and overwhelming. And now it’s, like — I don’t think it’s an exaggeration — we see four generations of people. People in their early sixties, late fifties that were late ’90s fans, and then their grandkids. There was an 8-year-old right in front last night in San Antonio.”

So, yeah, again, it’s just — I don’t know — timing, luck, what. But it seems to be happening for everybody. Obviously, Deftones have blown up. It’s crazy — they’re bigger than they’ve ever been. So I don’t know. Maybe the world just is ready to come to a nu metal show, I guess.”
