Primus‘ set at the legendary Red Rocks in Morrison, CO this past Wednesday, July 09th, wound up becoming an impromptu tribute to the eccentric alternative metal trio’s fifth full-length outing, 1997’s “Brown Album“.
Early into the set the band’s vocalist/bassist Les Claypool announced the unadvertised change in plans to fans in attendance, stating, “We wanted to do something special for Hoffer‘s first Red Rocks gig — and we literally just came up with this this afternoon. And I think it’s an idea, and Hoffer‘s very excited about it. But you guys are either gonna love it or you’re gonna hate it. So in celebration of Hoffer‘s first time at Red Rocks, we’re going to play seven songs off the ‘Brown Album‘, back-to-back, right now. Hence turning this evening at Red Rocks into an evening with Primus at the brown rocks.”
The ‘Hoffer‘ mentioned above is the band’s new drummer John Hoffman, who joined the group earlier this year after beating out some 7,000 hopefuls who auditioned for the role. Hoffman has called “Duchess And The Proverbial Mind Spread” a personal favorite of his to learn from the band’s catalog, and was the sole participant to play it during his auditions for the group.
After announcing the group’s revised plans for the setlist, they ran through “Fisticuffs“, “Golden Boy“, “Duchess And The Proverbial Mind Spread“, “Over The Falls“, “Restin’ Bones“, “Bob’s Party Time Lounge” and “Shake Hands With Beef“, before getting back to some of their more well-known hits.
The complete setlist for the show ran as follows:
