Marilyn Manson's Brighton, UK Show Canceled Amid Local Pushback

Marilyn Manson‘s planned October 29th European/UK tour kickoff show at the Brighton Centre in Brighton, UK has been canceled. The multi-platinum shock rocker has been facing considerable pushback for his live return to the UK this fall, with local politicians and activist groups aiming to get his shows in the region scrapped.

The above-mentioned show in Brighton recently drew criticism from British MP Siân Berry, who called for the show to be spiked, telling local council members:

“Many survivors in Brighton and Hove, and organisations supporting them, will have very serious concerns about this booking and its impact on other people visiting the city centre, local residents and the wider community.

Freedom of expression is an important principle that should be defended, including in relation to artists, but there is an obvious risk to community cohesion and the council has separate equalities obligations to foster good relations between people who share protected characteristics and people who do not share them.

The council has a responsibility to take action where there are risks of discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

The level and nature of the accusations against Warner are concerning enough alone, but so too is the message sent out by providing a platform for this individual, at our city’s biggest publicly owned venue, and what this will mean to survivors.”

Berry co-signed that letter alongside the Survivors’ Network, Reclaim The Night Brighton & Hove, The Queery Co-Op, and University of Sussex Students’ Union. A group of campaigners against Manson‘s UK shows dubbed No Stage For Abusers have also actively been lobbying to have his UK shows canceled, claiming this new blow to his tour as a victory. In a statement on the matter, they shared:

“We are very pleased to hear that Brighton Centre have decided to stand against male violence and misogyny and cancel the upcoming Marilyn Manson show.

A big thank you to everyone who was involved, all the MPs, councillors and organisations as well as every supporter who took the time to help out.

Thank you to Brighton Centre and Brighton & Hove council for doing the right thing.

The litany of sexual assault allegations and civil lawsuits filed against Manson in recent years have prompted these calls to have his shows dismissed. Local authorities investigated the claims, but earlier this year announced they would not be pursuing charges, stating, “We have determined that allegations of domestic violence fall outside of the statute of limitations, and we cannot prove charges of sexual assault beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Those allegations against Manson have also seen calls been made to have his planned October 31st show at The Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, UK canceled. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council leader Millie Earl recently stated that the show being pulled would, “reinforce the message that violence against women and girls isn’t something that’s acceptable in our community.”

Manson doesn’t appear to have commented on this new show cancelation, nor the pushback he is facing over the tour. His planned European/UK headlining run is set to proceed as follows:
