Sleep Token‘s meteoric rise to the top of the charts has put them on the radar of countless new fans, however, the recent record-breaking #1 debut of their album “Even In Arcadia“ led to some apparent confusion from GRAMMY Award-winning, multi-platinum musician Kali Uchis.
In since deleted posts made last week, Uchis shared a picture of the Billboard Artist 100 chart on her Instagram story, highlighting her position at #4. However, Sleep Token held the #1 position on that chart, and Ulchis decided to obscure their name and the accompanying picture of their vocalist Vessel with a white heart.
This led a social media user to call out Uchis stating, “Imagine being so petty that you censor the #1 band on an IG Story, Sleep Token is better” Uchis directly replied to that comment, stating, “To be honest I didn’t feel comfortable posting a photo of someone in black face it really wasn’t deeper than that, doll.”
This led another social media user to call Uchis out for her alleged hypocrisy in not covering up country artist Morgan Wallen in that same image. Presumably that mention was made in light of Walleninfamously being caught on video in 2021 uttering a racial slur. That social media user stated:
“So you’re not comfortable posting Sleep Token on your story because of alleged blackface, but you are comfortable with showing Morgan Wallen‘s face and name, when he is a known racist. So are you comfortable with posting racists on your story?”
Uchis directly replied:
“I actually know nothing about either person I just saw a photo that made me uncomfortable and covered it”
Rather than Uchis‘ apparent misconception, Vessel and his bandmates’ makeup of choice is rooted in theatrics, borrowing from the black metal style of corpse paint to accentuate their respective masks and cryptic imagery. You can see Uchis posts in the below Reddit gallery.
In now deleted posts, Kali Uchis accused the metal band, Sleep Token, of using payola and doing blackface.
