In a new exhaustive retrospective on A Perfect Circle‘s 25th anniversary, the alternative rock band offered a brief glimpse at what lies ahead. Just published online over at Revolver, that piece finds vocalist Maynard James Keenan and guitarist/vocalist, etc. Billy Howerdel recall the course of their multi-platinum career.
From their first meeting, to fitting the band in during Tool‘s various periods of downtime and legal drama, to even opening up on the departures of past members like bassist Paz Lenchantin and drummer Josh Freese, little is left uncovered.
Outside of the trip down memory lane though, Howerdel confirms writing has commenced on the A Perfect Circle‘s follow-up to 2018’s “Eat The Elephant“. Speaking of his process thus far for that eventual fifth full-length outing, Howerdel told the above-mentioned publication:
“As I’m writing, sometimes I find myself [thinking], Wow, I really like this, but man, this is fucking sinister. I’m in a not-sleeping-much and self-discovery mode. When I’m writing music, I’ve been full night-terror, waking up — like, can’t let your mind rest thing.”
Keenan added:
“I’m always writing. I’m writing with everyone… And if I can get the other guys [Tool] to dig in, there’s always that. I’m sure that Billy’s got a folder of fun stuff for me to dig through. It’s all about timing.”
A notorious overachiever, Keenan has been able to balance running several businesses and earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, all while fronting three successful bands. Regardless, A Perfect Circle fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too high just yet. Keenan still has harvesting season at his winery to contend with, and all signs indicate that another of his bands, Puscifer, will have their fifth studio album arriving later this year.
However, with Tool still seemingly operating at a glacial pace despite the best intentions of some of their members, there seemingly is a window of opportunity at some point to sneak in a new A Perfect Circle record, should Howerdel and Keenan manage to hammer things out.
A Perfect Circle are presently out on the road on the latest leg of the ‘Sessanta‘ tour, which finds members of the band swapping in and out with Puscifer and Primnus on a nightly basis. That run is celebrating the 60ish birthday of Keenan, with the first leg having taken place last year. The remaining dates for this year’s leg include:
