Of the current crop of younger metal drummers expected to carry the torch for the genre going forward is 22-year-old prodigy Greyson Nekrutman. After a brief stint in Suicidal Tendencies, Nekrutman took up the throne for Brazilian metal legends Sepultura last year amid their ongoing farewell tour.
Nekrutman made a very convincing argument regarding his exceptional talent when he crushed the notoriously taxing jazz standard “Caravan“ for Drumeo several years back. He’s picked up his fair share of admiration from the drumming community since then, including respect from one of the most renowned metal drummers out there in Tool‘s Danny Carey.
The latter acclaimed percussionist went so far as to setup shop directly behind Nekrutman‘s kit during Sepultura‘s March 30th performance at the annual ‘Lollapalooza Brazil‘ stop in São Paulo, Brazil. Nekrutman had that moment immortalized on film and shared the below footage of it:

Perhaps as a nod to that iconic display of reverence, Nekrutman recently took up covering Carey‘s powerhouse performance on the title track from Tool‘s 2006 album, “10,000 Days“. You can watch him run through one of the more challenging sections of that song below:
