Mutli-platinum alternative metal stars Tool wrapped up their first Latin American headlining tour tonight, March 30th, with a performance at ‘Lollapalooza Brasil‘. That annual festival was held at the Autódromo de Interlagos in São Paulo, Brazil. While that performance was professionally livestreamed across the internet, in accordance with the band’s wishes, the broadcast was once again restricted to wide shots filmed far from the stage.
A caption featured during the broadcast outlined that decision as follows, “At the request of the band Tool, the broadcast of this show is being done only with wide images.” This stipulation falls in line with the band’s generally strict policy regarding filming and smartphones at their shows.
Essentially, arguments previously made by members of the band insist they find the lights from cameras and smartphones being distracting/blinding to them on the stage. They’ve also claimed the presence of screens and lights in the audience can be distracting and rude to other concertgoers.
As an added bonus for this tour closing set, ex-Crypta guitarist Jéssica di Falchi sat in on “Jambi“, the third and final single to emerge from the band’s fourth studio album, 2006’s “10,000 Days“.
For now, footage of that entire livestream has been circulating online amongst fans of the band and can be seen below. As for the setlist, here’s what was played:
“Fear Inoculum”
“Jambi” (feat. Jéssica di Falchi)
“Stinkfist”
“Rosetta Stoned”
“Pneuma”
“The Grudge”
“Parabol”
“Parabola”
“Schism”
“Ænema”
“Flood”
With this tour now out of the way, the renowned band are set to block out the next few months to work on their follow-up to their sixth studio album. The group’s bassist Justin Chancellor conveyed those plans this past February, stating:
“When we get back from [our] trip [to Mexico and South America in March] — I think it’s only three weeks we’re gonna be [there] — but we have already shared with each other a lot of these new ideas, but when we get back, we’re actually gonna dedicate the next three months after that in the studio to organizing our ideas.”
However, it would appear that those sessions will be primarily limited to writing sessions featuring only 3/4th of the band, as vocalist Maynard James Keenan will soon be back out fronting A Perfect Circle and Puscifer on the impending ‘Sessanto v2.0‘ tour. This shouldn’t impede progress however, as Tool‘s well-documented laborious writing process and penchant for constant revisions have left Keenan preferring to participate on finished instrumentals. Back in 2017, he stated of that:
“As far as the way that Danny and Justin and Adam write, it’s a very tedious, long process. And they’re always going back over things and questioning what they did and stepping back and going back farther and going forward and, in a way, they’re laying a foundation, they’re putting in the footings for a house. So I can’t write melodies until the footings are in place. I can’t write words until the melodies are in place.
I can’t build walls and then start decorating this place until the foundation is in place. ‘Cause if they keep changing the foundation, changing the footings, the melodies change, and then the story, of course, isn’t getting written.”
While the once again near-mythical prospect of new material from Tool may be on the horizon, the future isn’t entirely bright for the group at the moment. There’s also the seemingly real possibility of a class-action lawsuit from unhappy fans who attended the first-ever ‘Tool Live In The Sand‘ festival earlier this month looming at the moment.
