Stephen Carpenter On New Deftones Album: "This One Sounds Like A Continuation Of 'Ohms' And 'Koi'"

It’s been a relatively long wait for the upcoming tenth studio album from multi-platinum alternative metal favorites Deftones. The celebrated band hit the studio in Nashville, TN earlier this year to lay down the tracks for that outing with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters). That wasn’t a first time pairing of course, as it was Nick Raskulinecz who previously oversaw the band’s past albums, “Diamond Eyes” and “Koi No Yokan“.

Several months after those sessions, vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno was back in the studio with Raskulinecz in May, finalizing his vocal parts for the record. Since then, there hasn’t been too much said about what fans can expect to hear on it, or when they can get their hands on it.

Presumably, with a U.S. tour set to launch in late February, the group will begin ramping up to the big reveal in a few months time. However, for now, in his latest appearance on B-Real‘s ‘The Dr. Greenthumb‘ show, guitarist Stephen Carpenter had a few more things to say about this highly anticipated full-length offering. When asked what it sounds like, he responded [transcribed by theprp.com]:

“I feel this one sounds like a continuation of ‘Ohms‘ and ‘Koi‘, that’s what I would say… I tell you what, I think when you hear it, like all of our records, you will hear our sound. You’ll hear us. But I think you’re going to hear things on this one that you never heard on any of them. So…”

When asked if there was any rap on it, Carpenter replied “not yet.” After B-Real noted that Moreno “usually finds a way to rap on it somewhere”, Carpenter stated:

“He’s really good at flipping up what he does, like, he always changes what he does,[while] still doing what he does. It’s actually pretty dope.”
