Mastodon Have "Tons Of Music" In The Works For Two Upcoming Projects

Mastodon have been working on two new projects throughout the year, according to a new interview with drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. He recently told Loudwire Nights of their current happenings on the creative front:

“Riffs. Drum beats and riffs. I can’t really divulge too much. It’s a hush-hush operation, very top secret.. I don’t wanna spoil it. There’s lots of music, that’s all I can say. There’s tons of music. We’ve been writing pretty much this whole time that we’ve been off since we got home from South America [in November 2023].

And after we got home from South America with Gojira, we opened Christmas presents and then, since like February or so, we’ve just been working hard making two different projects — not a double album, but two different projects. So that’s the nugget I can share with you.

Whatever those projects are, nobody knows. But there’s riffs involved. Some of the riffs are, like, really heavy and tasty and I really like ’em. I’m the metalhead in the band, so when we get some real heavy stuff, I’m, like, ‘Oh, yeah, I like that. It’s cool.'”

This past March the Atlanta, GA-based band hinted at the possibility of an upcoming 15th anniversary edition of their fourth studio album “Crack The Skye“. For now, they are celebrating the milestone of another key album in their catalog: their 2004 sophomore outing, “Leviathan“. That record 20 this year and the group are now out performing it in full nightly on a special co-headlining tour with groove metal royalty Lamb Of God.

The latter outfit is also ringing in the 20th anniversary of their gold-certified album “Ashes Of The Wake” on that trek, with Kerry King, Unearth and Malevolence opening.
