Machine Head‘s 1999 dive into nü-metal was a controversial move for the urbanized groove metal band at the time. While it was met with derision from some of their longtime fans and peers, it also helped to introduce the Bay Area group to a wider audience. But outside of the record, the music video for the lead single “From This Day” perhaps best encapsulates just how drastic the change was.
Largely gone were the bandanas and traditional hesher garb. In its place were blonde spikes, dyed polka dots and shiny body suits. That video now serves as a lasting relic of the some more questionable aspects of the genre’s fashion sense at the time.
The band’s then guitarist Ahrue Luster recently explained that he was responsible for Robb Flynn‘s puffy orange jacket in clip, having originally purchased it at Urban Outfitters. Luster also weighed in on why he opted for Tai-Chi-influenced attire, and some other aspects of the band’s radical makeover for the clip.
