Following a wave of controversy, Australian deathcore outfit Thy Art Is Murder look to have unveiled Tyler Miller of Aversions Crown, etc. as their new vocalist. Last week saw Thy Art Is Murder make the surprising decision to digitally release their latest album “Godlike” with newly re-recorded vocals from the then unidentified musician. No advance notice was given of the switch.
Arriving in tandem with the album was word of the band’s decision to fire their frontman CJ McMahon. It was said that McMahon‘s sharing of his increasingly controversial viewpoints on several topics had become an issue for the band, including his infamous commentary on gender identity, which went on to firmly divide the band’s fanbase.
While many have, and continue to, criticize the group for ‘capitulating’ to the ‘woke mob’, the band themselves pushed back. They stated that the comment from McMahon mentioned above was but the latest in a number of incidents that drove a wedge between themselves and their now ex-singer.
While announcing McMahon‘s firing, the group stated:
“We understand that this may come as a surprise and we want to assure you that this decision was made to preserve the band’s integrity and direction.
What transpired over the past month was not the cause of this action, but just another symptom of the drawn out breakdown in his character and judgement. The straw that broke the camels back if you will long story short the fallout has been immense.
We were lobbed with threats to destroy Thy Art Is Murder from the inside if we did not capitulate to various ideologies that he holds. Everyone has their own right to free speech and to seek their truth; they are also free to receive the consequences that come with it.”
Since McMahon‘s firing, the situation has continued to degrade across social media, with McMahon claiming he was forced to make an apology video, while also asserting that he was unaware in advance of the band’s decision to replace him on the record.
A warring and fractured fanbase has been the end result, with ugly verbal conflicts playing out across the comments section on the social media of both the band and McMahon. In addition to all that that, a version of “Godlike” featuring McMahon‘s original vocal performances can be found on the physical copies of the album. While the band themselves have stopped short of Miller being the group’s new vocalist, all signs currently point that way.
It is not clear if the new vocals apparently provided by Miller will eventually replace McMahon‘s performances on a future run of the physical copies of the record.
