Year Of The Knife Share Update On Injuries Suffered By Vocalist Madi Watkins In Horrific Van Crash

Year Of The Knife guitarist/bassist Brandon Watkins has passed along a new health update on his wife and bandmate, Madi Watkins. While a horrific van crash in Salt Lake City, UT late last month saw all members of the band left with injuries of varying degrees, it was vocalist Madi Watkins who was initially left in critical condition. She remained in a medically induced coma for some time afterwards before being downgraded to stable condition.

Since then she has underground several major surgeries she required, as the crash left her with head and spinal trauma, a broken jaw on both sides, as well as fractures in her face, ribs, femur and ankle. Brandon‘s father (and Madi’s father-in-law) Sol Knopf had the following to say of Madi‘s health in an update shared yesterday, July 15th:

“Our Madi has a very long journey to recovery ahead of her. She’s already had surgeries to fix her broken jaw, facial fractures, femur and ankle. The most troubling and challenging of her injuries is the trauma to her brain. It is impossible to say how long it will take for Madi to fully return to us. Healing of the human brain after severe trauma remains a mystery, and requires a patience from loved ones that is virtually impossible to achieve.

Me, mom and Michelle will remain out in Utah for the foreseeable future to see Madi through this long journey. The funds raised continue to help the family with the costs involved. We also know that insurance deductibles and costs not paid for by insurance will be enormous. Every dollar donated makes a huge difference and we are so grateful. Much love and thanks to you all!”

You can see the post itself, which features a photo of Madi reaching for Brandon from the hospital bed, over at Instagram. Madi remains hospitalized in Utah, where she will remain for the considerable future as she convalesces and faces down a new set of challenges.

An update shared this past week, found Brandon stating that in addition to physical rehabilitation, Madi will also be undergoing substantial amounts of speech therapy and cognitive therapy across the weeks and months to come.

The aforementioned van crash left guitarist Aaron Kisielewski, who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, with a broken femur and a lacerated carotid artery. His brother, drummer Andy suffered two broken ankles. Brandon was left with a concussion and multiple contusions.

With prolonged medical costs piling up, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to assist the band during this trying time. Thus far $200,000 has been raised to help ease the burden, with a goal of $300,000 currently set. You can help out over at
