The estate of the late Pantera/HELLYEAH drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott has issued a statement regarding the impending return of Pantera to the stage. That storied Texan groove metal outfit will be playing their first live show since 2001 this coming Friday, December 02nd.
The legendary outfit will be kicking off their run with a performance at this year’s ‘Hell & Heaven Metal Fest‘ In Toluca, Mexico. With both Vinnie Paul and his brother, guitar legend “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, having passed away, Pantera‘s vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist/vocalist Rex Brown have seen fit to resurrect the group.
To do so, they recruited two of the Abbott brother’s close friends, guitarist Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne) and drummer Charlie Benante (Anthrax.)
It was reported by Billboard earlier this year that the estates of both of the Abbott brothers had signed off on the Anselmo and Brown‘s decision to once again perform the band’s catalog under their established moniker.
A post shared via Vinnie Paul‘s social media tonight (November 30th) reflects that, while also putting a bit of cold water on the ‘reunion’ talk. It reads as follows:
“There can never be a PANTERA reunion without Vinnie and Dime. However, there is no better way to celebrate and honor Vinnie and Dime’s legacy, than to bring the music of PANTERA directly to the fans. We are honored that Charlie and Zakk, their very close friends and musical brothers, will share the stage with Philip and Rex, to unleash the power of PANTERA live around the world.
The Vincent Paul Abbott Estate“
Notably the social media pages of Dimebag have been actively promoting the band’s forthcoming touring plans, which now include shows with Metallica and another newly announced European festival stop (in Bologna, Italy.)
