After years of pandemic-related delays, ‘The Stadium Tour‘ kicked off tonight (June 16th) at the Truist Park in Atlanta, GA. In addition to performances from the likes of Def Leppard, Poison, Joan Jett And The Blackhearts and more, that festival also saw the live return of Mötley Crüe. The acclaimed glam metal band went back on their contract to never tour again following their 2015 farewell trek to head out on this bill.
The opening date wasn’t without its hiccups as if was revealed that the group’s drummer/vocalist Tommy Lee had broken several of his ribs prior to this kickoff show and thus only sat behind the kit for the first five tracks (“Wild Side“, “Shout At The Devil“, “Too Fast For Love“, “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)” & “Saints Of Los Angeles“). Tommy Clufetos (Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne) took on the drumming duties for the rest of the set onwards.
A statement shared by Lee on his health tonight reads:
“Man ya’ll ain’t gonna believe this shit!…I broke 4 fucking ribs! But I’ve been resting and healing and even though the doctor tells me I shouldn’t play at all, you know I’m stubborn and I’ll beast through the pain every show for as many songs as I can!
And have no fear, my boy Tommy Clufetos is here to help me out until I’m back at 100%…we’ve all been waiting years for this moment and there’s no way I’m missing this! On with the show!”
Additionally, the set saw Machine Gun Kelly join the group for the live debut of their collaborative track “The Dirt (est. 1981)“. Machine Gun Kelly of course played the part of Tommy Lee in the 2019 film adaptation of their biography ‘The Dirt“.
Meanwhile, after numerous disastrous solo performances over the years, there was much discussion ahead of this tour regarding Mötley Crüe vocalist Vince Neil‘s ability to play live. Below you can find some fan footage from the set to judge for yourself.
