Tool’s Adam Jones Elaborates On Picking Openers For Their Tours: “We Don’t Have To Look For A Band To Draw Tickets”

Multi-platinum progressive alternative metal outfit Tool have always opted to go their own way when it comes to their career. With the success they’ve earned over the years, they’ve also been granted the luxury of taking their own approach to touring. As such, their process of selecting the bands they take out on the road is an unconventional one.

Rather than partake in the traditional approach of package tours or selling off slots, the group have instead implemented a diplomatic approach, allowing each member of the band to pick an artist to open for the duration of a leg or full-fledged tour.

That decision has made for an eclectic roster of opening acts over the years, some of which seem unconventional on the surface. Earlier this year, the band’s frontman Maynard James Keenan picked alternative rock band Blonde Redhead to open for the first leg of their North American tour.

Speaking of his choice this past January, he offered:

“The approach or criteria I usually take when it’s my turn to choose an opener, is Diversity. No point in choosing something similar to us. Most are only here for the headliner anyway.

But for those with open hearts and minds, I choose something I feel is compelling in its own way. Blonde Redhead is my pick for this upcoming run. Incredible melodies, complex & subtle rhythms, and non traditional arrangements.

But Nothing like Tool
And Not meant to be. Obviously.
If it’s not your thing, don’t worry. What you came to hear will soon follow. But if any of what you hear resonates, Blonde Redhead have a deep catalog for you to get lost in for years to come.

Thank you in advance for welcoming Blonde Redhead into your ear holes. Looking forward to playing for all of you very soon.”

For the band’s ongoing European/UK tour, guitarist Adam Jones was on deck to pick the opener and selected the now infamous Brass Against. Discussing that recently with Metal Hammer, Jones stated:

“I mean, a lot of bands that are our level do the industry giveaway, take out a band that will actually pay them for the exposure. We’ve never done that. Never done pay-to-play back in the old Sunset Strip days, and never charged bands that we take out with us. We always pay the bands and ask them ourselves, and we always take out bands that we like.

We don’t have to look for a band to draw tickets, because we don’t really have a problem doing that, so what we do is we take turns. It’s Dan‘s turn so he picks this band, then it’s Justin’s turn and he picks that band, Maynard‘s turn and he picks a band. This time it was my turn and I picked Brass Against. I have always really liked them: their energy, their cover songs, their wind section…you don’t really see that anymore.”

When asked in the chat which band he would like to take out at some point, he responded, “That’s a loaded question! There are so many! I really like Arch Enemy. That was one that I was really thinking about asking.”
