Shavo Odadjian Says He’s Still Holding On To 25 Song Ideas For A New System Of A Down Album

System Of A Down bassist Shavo Odadjian recently launched the first single from his new project North Kingsley and will release the first of a series of EPs from the project this Friday, August 14th. Despite his shift in focus, Odadjian still remains hopeful that System Of A Down will one day be able to put aside their much storied differences and create a new album.

System Of A Down have not released new music since 2005 and though there was an attempt to make an album several years ago that result in over a dozen songs being worked on, those sessions eventually did not pan out.

Creative and financial disputes in regards to the direction of the material, songwriting input and writing credits for royalties ultimately saw the band abandon the project. Guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian would go on to repurpose some of those song ideas on his latest Scars On Broadway release “Dictator“, while Serj Tankian has put some ideas he had for System Of A Down toward his upcoming rock EP.

Unlike his bandmates, Odadjian‘s ideas for System Of A Down haven’t spilled over into his other projects thus far. Speaking recently with Metal Hammer, Odadjian confirmed that he still has “25 different things that I could still bring to System.” When asked if launching North Kingsley was his way of moving on from a new System Of A Down album, he replied:

“No. No way. This is new and it’s great and I can’t wait to take it over the top, and my heart is in this because System is not working. But my heart is always with System as well.

I’ll take the time off and work with System any time they’re ready. I have about 25 different things that I could still bring to System. I know Daron’s got tons of music. We are always writing music.

I’m not closing the book on System because I’m doing this. I know a lot of people are like, ‘Oh no, it’s the final guy, the one who was always System Of A Down, always pushing for System, the cheerleader – now he’s doing this.’

Yeah, I’m doing my own thing because I need to. And when the time is right, I’ll be doing that other thing. I’m not going to close any doors to anything ever.”
