These days, it’s surprisingly commonplace for power couples in the metal and hard rock scenes to musically collaborate and tour together. Halestorm‘s Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger and Suicide Silence‘s Alex Lopez and Jinjer‘s Tatiana Shmailyuk serve as more recent examples of that.
One such couple who have been spending a lot of time together in recent years in their professional lives is In This Moment frontwoman Maria Brink and DED frontman Joe Cotela. The latter guests on the track “Hunting Grounds” on In This Moment‘s latest album “Mother“.
Their bands have toured together a number of times over the past few years and they were once again scheduled to hit the road together this spring until the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their plans.
In a recent chat with ‘BREWtally Speaking Podcast‘ (hear it below,) Cotela was asked if he has any concern over the success of his band being attributed to his romantic relationship with Brink. He commented:
“I’m sure there’s going to be people that are going to feel that way. But yeah, like you said, I mean, if you know about the band and if you took a minute to look at it, we were touring and, I mean we toured with the Korn and Stone Sour last year, or a couple years ago. We’ve done all the big festivals.
I mean, we’ve all been in bands for like 15 to 20 years in different ways, you know. This is in no way like a ‘we met some people and everybody hooked us up’.
Yeah, I’m in love with Maria and we like to tour together, you know to spend time together and be together. But organically we met because they put us on tour, before we knew each other. They put us on tour because they liked our band, just like a lot of the other tours that we’ve been on.
And, yeah, we’ve toured for, I think, three straight years now. So yeah, I mean that’s our relationship is… I guess it’s because of all that hard work, I was in a place to meet her and become what we have.”
