John Dolmayan Says Serj Tankian Wasn’t Involved With Past Writing Sessions For System Of A Down’s Scrapped New Album

With a new covers album from his These Grey Men project arriving later this month, System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan has been doing the press rounds as of late. Obviously, it’s inevitable that the topic of System Of A Down is also brought up, given the band’s active touring status.

In a recent interview with Loudwire Nights, Dolmayan spoke of the writing sessions that took place several years ago for a new album from the band which eventually fizzled out over internal disputes.

Members of the band revealed at the time that roughly fifteen new songs had been worked out, but it turns out that the band’s frontman Serj Tankian had no involvement in them. Dolmayan commented:

“First of all, nothing is finished until all four members are on it, and Serj [Tankian] had nothing to do with it [the new material]. He wasn’t at those rehearsals, he wasn’t in the process of bringing the songs and working on them or writing them. These were just things we did with the anticipation of a record happening, which never happened.”

He continued:

“We’re a very stubborn and stupid band. As sad as that is to say, we never reached our potential, and I don’t think we ever will.”

Dolmayan isn’t yet ready to shut the door on the band’s recorded output however, later offering “You never know what happens” in his thoughts regarding the band’s future.

While Tankian didn’t take part directly in the aforementioned writing sessions, it seems he did at least write material with System Of A Down in mind in the past. In June of 2018 he revealed that he had written five new songs for the band but had since decided to repurpose them for a potential solo EP or other future output.

Likewise, you may have also even heard some of the songwriting ideas the band came up with during those initial sessions as guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian eventually made use of some of them as Scars On Broadway tracks.

While the group remain locked in an impasse behind the scenes over creative and financial concerns when it comes to songwriting and writing credit splits, they do remain friendly enough to tour and will be playing a number of dates later this year.

Meanwhile, Dolmayan‘s crowdfunded These Grey Men covers album is headed for a February 28th release and finds Tankian guesting on covers of the Talking Heads‘ “Road To Nowhere” and David Bowie‘s “Starman“—the latter of which you can check out here.
