Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer vocalist Maynard James Keenan‘s early musical history recently came to light on the internet thanks to a former bandmate of his, Mike Meengs, sharing the material to Tool Fans. Meengs and Keenan were part of the band TexA.N.S. (aka Tex And The Anti Nazi Squad) back in 1986 and Meengs recently uploaded a recording from that group.

Two songs are available, including a 1986 live performance of “Tweeked & In God We Trust” that features Keenan on bass, and “Who Leads You“, which finds Keenan on vocals.

Meengs commented of the group via social media:

“I’m a keyboardist from Michigan. Maynard lived down the street from me for a while, and we did a few small projects together in the late 80’s. We started the TexANS together(with him on bass), did a couple coffee house gigs together, and recorded the first song that he wrote lyrics and sang on(I still have the tape!) on my old 4-track!

I ended up selling him the 4-track and a cheap drum machine which he then used for his CAD recordings. He’s one of my only friends that went on to super-stardom and I’m super proud of his achievements!…”

He further stated in a separate post:

“…Here’s the song I recorded with Maynard. I think we recorded it in 1986. It features Doug Wolters on guitar, me on programming and keys, and Maynard on bass and lead vocals. Maynard and I sang the backing vocals together. I believe this to be the first song Maynard wrote lyrics and sang on.

Yet it’s a bit cheesy, but we all have to start somewhere. I think his lyrics are cool though…see what you think!…”
