Devin Townsend Recruits Members Of Megadeth, Bad Wolves, Etc. For His Upcoming Return To Playing Heavier Material

Earlier this year Devin Townsend outlined his plans for touring across the next 12 months or so in regards to his latest album “Empath“. If you missed what he has in store, he will soon be returning to touring with a full band, following the past year or so he spent on the road playing acoustically.

For his return to a full band, he has enlisted a rotating cast of musicians to join him join him on the road for what he refers to as separate ‘volumes’ of the tour. The first volume of touring he has planned will find him out in Europe and the UK this year. For that run he has enlisted:

Vocals/guitars – Ché Aimee Dorval (Casualties Of Cool)
Drums – Morgan Ågren (Kaipa)
Guitars – Mike Keneally (Dethklok)
Ambient guitars – Markus Reuter (Stick Men, Stick Men)
Bass – Nathan Navarro
Keyboards – Diego Tejeida (Haken)

A rotating lineup of musicians will also join him during the planned second volume of touring he has planned, which will primarily take place in the summer and find him returning to his heavier material (including the reintroduction of some Strapping Young Lad songs).

You won’t have to wait that long to experience heavy Devy though, as he has just announced the first show of that second volume run will take place in January with the following musicians set to join him:

Guitars – Wes Hauch (ex-The Faceless/Black Crown Initiate)
Bass – Kyle Konkiel (Bad Wolves)
Drums – Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth/ex-Soilwork)

The show in question will take place aboard the annual ‘70000 Tons Of Metal‘ cruise, which will set sail from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Cozumel, Mexico from January 07th to 11th. Townsend has further clarified that a third volume of touring he has planned for the fall of 2020 will be “decidedly unmetal”. Following the completion of that, he intends to head back into the studio for his next album in 2021.

For now, the coming months will bring the arrival of a deluxe 5.1 edition of his latest album “Empath” and the next volume of his ‘Eras‘ vinyl box set reissues. Aside from the aforementioned cruise appearance, you can catch Townsend out at the following dates:
